Scotty McCreery is finding a balance between traditionalism and pop

Singer Scotty McCreery attends the 48th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 7, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 23, 2013 - Newcomer Scotty McCreery has a deep bellowing voice that easily lends itself to more traditional-sounding material. Growing up, that's what the 19-year-old college freshman was surround with -- often times channeling Randy Travis and George Strait on his debut record Clear as Day. Featuring his American Idol coronation track "I Love You This Big," McCreery's debut record bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, moving 197,000 copies. It is now a platinum-selling achievement, and as he heads into the release of his followup later this year, he reveals that he is still finding a balance between the traditionalism that he loves and the dominating Country-pop found on radio.

“We’re in the studio right now,” he tells Billboard. We’ve got about 12 songs cut.”

The forthcoming album's lead single "See You Tonight" features a more modern sound for the budding singer-songwriter. McCreery recently debuted the track on April 11 on the Idol stage. “That’s the one I’m really excited about because I had a hand in writing it,” he explains. “That is one of those things I didn’t have a chance to do on the first record because coming off Idol as the winner, you have a deadline for the first record."

'American Idol' star Scotty McCreery learning to balance career with university

Country sensation Scotty McCreery, who found fame as the winner of 2011's 'American Idol', has revealed that he's currently balancing school with a successful music career.

The 19-year-old, who enjoyed a No.1 with his debut album, told Billboard.com that he is currently studying for a degree at North Carolina State University while travelling around on tour in support of his forthcoming new album:

"I have school Monday through Wednesday and we hit the touring circuit Thursday through Sunday."
Speaking about his new record, McCreery added that he is particularly excited to release it because he has been penning some of the tracks himself:

“We’re in the studio right now and we’ve got about 12 songs cut. That’s the one I’m really excited about because I had a hand in writing it. That is one of those things I didn’t have a chance to do on the first record because coming off Idol as the winner, you have a deadline for the first record. We were on the Idol tour as well so we were trying to squeeze it all in."
