REGINA — Scotty McCreery has been labelled by some as a country artist that straddles the line between classic and contemporary country.  The 19-year-old singer, who is scheduled to appear at the Craven Country Jamboree on Sunday night, can live with that label.

“I love that comparison,” said McCreery in a recent telephone interview before an appearance in Grand Island, Neb. “I’d rather be straddling that line than the country and country pop line. I grew up with classic country, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, all those guys. Elvis Presley was another big one. He wasn’t country but he had some country influences. I love that. I try and have those roots in my music but I have to be smart about it. I couldn’t put out a classic country album — it wouldn’t sell. But we try to keep those little nuances of classic country in there.

McCreery is on the cusp of releasing his second album and given the success of his debut disc, many in the music business feel the 19-year-old is facing increased pressure and expectations. He doesn’t see it that way.
“People will look at it that way but I don’t see it that way,” said McCreery. “I’m just trying to get my music out there. When you’re putting a new record out you’re starting from scratch again. You’re not putting your career on the line but you’re putting all these songs out there, hoping the fans will like them. You can like them all you want but if the fans hate them, then you’ve got nothing.
“So we put a lot of time into it. Whether it goes out there and does what the first record did, or even if it doesn’t, I’m going to be extremely proud of this record.”

  1. Can't wait for Scotty's album. Love everything he sings with that great voice of his that he has been sharing with us! When I was watching him throughout American Idol there wasn't a song that I didn't like. He sang other big name artists songs and some were even better with his version. I already like See You Tonight, Suntan and Rock this night so I know I will love his album! Grandma from Buffalo.

  2. I agree! I am still listening to CWSM even though it is the middle of summer! I don't think I have ever enjoyed a CD more than that one! Every song on it is just incredible in its own way. This new album is gonna be stellar!!

  3. I Can't wait either cause all of us is going to love it. I have See you Tonight on my Spotify and I listen to it alot & love it so much. Cause we already love the three that's from it so we will super love it. I been listening to CAD & CWSM too. Love everything he sings and I know I will love the new one.
