Exclusive: Scotty McCreery Credits Garth Brooks For Reason He Attends College

When Scotty McCreery took home the title for 2011's 'American Idol' winner, he had his career path all in place. The young star finished high school, and then joined fellow superstars on the road where he performed all across the country night after night. After rubbing elbows with some of music's greatest artists of our time, McCreery had pondered what it would be like to attend college back home in North Carolina.

"College was always big for me before this thing happened," McCreery tells Roughstock. "It was one of those things where I had to think about it and wonder if I was going to sacrifice anything."

After touring with Brad Paisley, McCreery was leaning more and more toward college after the superstar told the 'Idol' winner it is something he definitely had to do. "Then the biggest guy who kind of sold me on college was Garth Brooks," reveals McCreery. "We were in Vegas, and I got the chance to go see him and meet him, and that was before I even applied or enrolled. I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m thinking about going to college, but I’m getting mixed reviews from people around me.’ He was like, ‘Man, you better go to college and you better do it while you’re this age.’ Garth is doing pretty good for himself, so I thought alright man [laughs]! He kind of sold me on it."

However, advice on schooling isn't the only useful bits of knowledge that McCreery has been soaking up from the likes of Garth Brooks and Brad Paisley. "I tell you what … especially from those two guys," says McCreery, "they really just live by something that we all get taught from being a toddler, and that’s pretty much in a roundabout way, treat others like you want to be treated. That’s probably the biggest thing that I’ve learned from Paisley throughout his tour. I would go out in a ballcap and hoodie to watch him perform pretty much every night with the fans. They didn’t know it was me, but I was out there with them seeing him perform. I learned more from him backstage and how he treated his crew and how he ran his tour and was just such a class act. He was the biggest star there, headlining arena tours and selling them out, but he still treats people like they’re his brother. Being on my own headlining tour now, obviously we’re not doing arenas, but I’m trying to take the same traits I’ve learned from him and do them on my tour."

McCreery's current headlining trek -- Weekend Roadtrip Tour -- also features Sarah Darling. Visit McCreery's official website at for a complete list of dates where the tour will be stopping along the way.
