Scotty McCreery talks tour, college and new idol judges

We caught up with Scotty McCreery last week and talked a little bit about life on the road, college and some of the new “American Idol” judges.

The Weekend Roadtrip tour with Sarah Darling fits well with McCreery’s college schedule, he says, allowing him to frontload his classes Monday through Wednesday before getting back out into what he calls the “real world.”

Though still fresh-faced at 19, McCreery also has some old-soul charm and presence. And he’s not afraid to show a few glimpses of humor, too, saying he wanted to call the tour the “Dadgum Scotty McCreery Tour ... but that got kind of shot down.”

He also marvels at some of the coincidences within the compressed time of his young career.
“I actually met [Sarah Darling] a couple of years ago. I was at a Braves game on an “Idol” tour and she was singing the anthem that day, and who’d a thunk, a couple years down the road, we’d be on tour together.”

McCreery says he’s trying to make his freshman experience at North Carolina State as normal as possible.  “I live with three of my boys that I’ve known since I was 2 years old,” he says, adding that he’s also gotten a couple of requisite parking tickets, plays intramural basketball and eats in the dining halls. Come Thursday, though, it’s back out on the road.

When asked about Keith Urban’s role as a judge on “American Idol,” the show that launched McCreery’s career, he says, “I love it. I think he’s giving out great advice, I think it’s great for any kind of country artist that might come onto that show.”

“I’m sure he’s going to have a lot of stories sitting between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.”
We asked if he thought that Minaj gets country music?  “I don’t see how she could. I mean, country music is, it’s kind of like that tight-knit kind of family thing, and she’s pretty far away from it, I would say.”  “She’s in her own niche, but that ain’t country.”

  2. I know how you feel. I wear 1 of my many Scotty dogtag necklaces nearly everyday, so if people ask, I promote him. I, like you, have been to many of his concerts, and have 2 more scheduled this year, and I have even got to talk to him before his baseball game. I have a Scotty clock on my wall, a big picture of him and I together on my wall. And I am old enough to be his Mom or Grandma. I,like you, and many others, will be a fan for life. one friend even kidded me about getting help, like I had an addiction. I am so Thankful for this site to keep informed on Scotty. janfan

  8. I just watched the best video from dover concert someone posted on my facebook page.It was so close up,the sound was awesome,it was Scotty doing Mamma loves papa,it was awesome. He is the perfect artist to sing that type of song, close to end he brings his band up front there so close to the edge the fans could touch them, they were so good by far is my most favorite video. It's not posted on youtube,it was something to do with micosoft,or Donna might have been able to pull it up,and post it .here.I seen one posted somewhere else,,but it wasn't clear at all,It was like being there front row seat..Maybe one day it will appear on here.

  10. I read the comment about the cougars she needs to go to some of the concert in the music centers .In Lancaster last year there were all ages that follow Scotty. From the young fans to the older fans. These folks weather young or old have supported, and followed Scotty since idolThere were husband, and wives, elderly grandpas, all enjoying this young man show.At these concerts you go to enjoy a show, and support an artist you like. It's a lot of these folks that helped Scotty win idol, also there money is helping, and supporting him thru album sales, and going to his concerts. One concert alone we spent over three thousand dollars for vip, seats, It was one heck of a show, with Brad, and we all had the best time ever.My daughters, are gorgeous, brilliant, highly educated women who enjoy life, and there not cougars, they have husbands, and beautiful sons, and daughters of there own.some people are what we call kill joy's,and likes to take the joy out of other peoples lives.Don't feel bad because a persons is insensitive to other peoples feelings.Enjoy the show, support Scotty all you want, and you don't have to apologize to anyone for supporting an artist you like ..Always stay young at heart, and don't let anyone try to make you feel old,or make you stop enjoying life....

    1. For some reason these young girls feel as if only they can enjoy Scotty and his music . Truth be told this web site is geared to middle age and older fans all though everyone is welcome . We are the ones buying 10 20 cd to give to friends family spending big bucks on concert tickets . When i did my vip at pittsburg i was front row and these young teens tried to muscle their way infront of the 50 vip fans those kids had general tickets. The concert was all standing room only . Needless to say thier antics didnt work we told them to get back where they belonged we paid our money . I bet all ALL 50 IN THE MEET AND GREET EXCEPT A MOTHER OF A 4 YEAR OLD SO CUTE WERe OVER 30 YEARS OLD .

    2. Ps it was funny there were 4boys and and 4 girls in that group of teens the boys were there to see Sarah Darling they made fun of Scotty and their girlfriends for freaking out before Scotty came out . I looked back about the 3rd song in those boys were rocking and yelling awsome Scotty i dont think they even heard him sing before . When we were leaving they were stoked high 5 and all .one said ill be buying that dudes cd for sure . Lol

  11. Hey Stylin,
I was at Beacon too and Bethel Woods with Brad, VT state Fair, Springfield MA, Mayo in Morristown, NJ, and Idol concert in Long Island NY. I live in CT and I am thrilled that I've been able to see Scotty so many times. I will be seeing him in Wallingford, CT in April, and will see him at either Mayo or Red Bank NJ in May or both depending on my son' s baseball and swim meet schedule. I hope to go to more this year. My husband, son, and I love Scotty and always have the best time taking our family roadtrip to see him. We all love this incredibly talented young man. He's a great role model for my son and he's adorable when he follows the SHDC philosophy. We fully support him. He is the only artist I would drive 5 hours to see. He is the best!!! I'm so glad you were able to see him so many times too!

  12. Also, this grandmother was walking by The Beacon in NYC when we were standing outside waiting to go in and asked who Scotty was and if it was appropriate for her 7 year old grandson. I said YES and preceded to tell her all about Scotty as did some high school girls, and my husband and son who is 11. She went over to the ticket window to see if she could buy tickets quickly and get her gson in time for the show. She loved that there were so many ages, male and female, to see him with big smiles waiting to see him. Scotty always has very nice fans at his shows.

  13. I just watched a video from the Atlantic city NJ Suntan . The most quiet concert . No screaming no standing nothing who can just sit during Scotty singing Suntan ? No wonder Scotty loved Pittsburg . They are lucky i wasnt there lol.
