Josh Turner on His New Album and Protégé Scotty McCreery

By Erin Hill

With four #1 singles and two Grammy Award nominations under his belt, country star Josh Turner is ready to go another round with his latest album,Punching Bag, due out June 12.

Turner, 34, talked to Parade.com about the meaning behind his new album, being a role model to American Idolwinner Scotty McCreery, and more.

On being a role model to last year's American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery — who happened to bring a lot of attention to Josh's hit, "Your Man."

"I got a lot of attention for that. It was great for me because I didn’t have to really work for it! But I couldn’t have asked for a better protégé to be out there singing my music in front of millions of people. He was great. Scotty is just your classic American hometown boy who grew up loving music and family. He has a lot of great values and a great head on his shoulders. I’m really proud of him for doing things the right way and not trying to rush into anything. I know his plate is full right now because he’s finishing up high school, he’s doing the music thing, he’s about to enter college, so he’s got a lot going on. He’s still in that impressionable age where everything is new to him and he’s just learning a lot in a really short time. I think he’s a great role model for a lot of young people out there. I was very grateful that he was a fan of mine. I don’t watch American Idol and when it happened, my phone blew up with text messages and I had to check him out and I followed him throughout the season. It’s pretty wild to see an artist grow up and develop in front of the world. You really open yourself up to a lot of criticism and it takes a special person to be able to do that."
