Scotty McCreery to Show Up in ‘Magical’ Moment During ‘Hart of Dixie’ Appearance

We told you way back in January that young country crooner Scotty McCreery is scheduled to make an appearance on the CW’s show ‘Hart of Dixie’ later in April. And of course, he’ll be doing what he does best — crooning. Thanks to TV Guide, we now have more details about his guest-starring role. McCreery will serenade the characters George and Zoe (played by Scott Porter and Rachel Bilson, respectively) in the April 23 episode of the Southern-based comedic drama.
For those who follow the show, the reported word is that George and Zoe leave town together and wind up at a bar, where McCreery offers up some music for them. Porter told TV Guide, ”George finds out some secrets [like Lemon's affair] and calls Zoe out of the blue to get out of Dodge. They end up having a magical evening. It’s a glimpse into what they could be, but it’s bittersweet because they know circumstances prevent it from being more” (quote viaAceShowBiz).
Despite not being old enough to drink, McCreery get to be a part of that “magical evening” in the bar, bringing his music into the mix. The 18-year-old ‘Idol’ winner nabbed the fan-voted Best New Artist at last weekend’s ACM Awards, beating out the other members of the top three, Brantley Gilbert and Hunter Hayes. Upon receiving the prestigious surprise award, McCreery said, “[I have to] thank my good Lord and savior, Jesus Christ … country radio … [and I have to] thank the fans. You rock!”
The admirable teen, whose star has been on the rise since his 2011 ‘Idol’ win, also recently announced that he’ll be shipping off to college soon, attending North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where his dad also went to school. Even when his career is in such a great place, McCreery seems to have his head about him and value the importance of getting his education while furthering his music at the same time.

OFFSTAGE: Scotty McCreery's SAT Scores

Written by Alison Bonaguro

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

I know I should have only asked Scotty McCreery questions about his ACM nomination. But come on. Aren't you a little curious about his upcoming college life and how he ended up making the choice he did? Me, too. So when he came walking down the red carpet at Sunday's (April 1) awards show, I first asked him how he did on his SATs. "I did pretty well. The score was up there, and enough to get me into college," McCreery told me. Then I asked McCreery if he will be doing the whole college experience for real. Will he eat in the cafeteria? Be a Lambda Chi? Pull all-nighters studying for psych finals? And he said as much as possible, yes. "I've got four guys I know pretty well that I'm gonna room with. Guys I can trust. I don't know what dorm life will be like, and I for sure didn't know what a random roommate would be like," he admitted. He also told me he'd try to maintain a schedule of school during the week and shows on weekends. I know country stars are so good at balancing families and life on the road. But has anyone ever done what McCreery is going to do: balance college and life on the road?

Access Hollywood's 2012 ACM Awards interview with Scotty McCreery

Scotty McCreery chats with Access at the 2012 Academy of Country Music Awards about how life has changed since winning “American Idol.” What was it like going back to high school after his big win? Do people treat him differently? Plus, how does he balance school and music?

Scotty McCreery is a terrific example of unheralded talent

And say what you want about Scotty McCreery (who, by the way, is truly an amazing person as well as performer), but he’s a terrific example of an unheralded talent whose fans brought him to national prominence (even if it was on TV’s American Idol). Congratulations to this high school student who won the New Artist Award, and promptly thanked God, paid tribute to the other award nominees and, most of all, his fans.

And that army—whether they are fans of Church, the Eli Young Band, McCreery or others—is what may well renew the faith of country music fans who want to follow the more traditional path of country music. Not to mention those performers who forge their own musical trails just like country music legends Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner and others did way back when.

What’s that saying about not all those who wander are lost?
