Scotty McCreery has won the 2011 Taste of Country Award for Best New Artist. His victory was the second most lopsided of all 10 Taste of Country Awards categories. McCreery picked up almost 43 percent of the votes in the year’s most voted on Taste of Country award category.

The singer’s fans continue to step up when he asks them to. Their loyalty was forged during the early rounds of ‘American Idol,’ and it proved strong enough to allow him to be crowned the Season 10 champion. McCreery’s debut album, ‘Clear as Day,’ debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard charts, making him the first country artist to accomplish that feat and the youngest male ever to top the charts.

Additionally, the 18-year-old sang the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ at the World Series, headlined the American Idols Live Tour, scored an opening slot on Brad Paisley‘s 2012 tour, became the first Taste of Country Showdown Hall of Famer, won the ACA New Artist of the Year award and still had time to keep up with his studies at Garner High School and deliver gift boxes to the Dominican Republic.

Brantley Gilbert finished second in the voting, with just over 20 percent of the votes. Lauren Alaina, Thompson Square and Pistol Annies rounded out the nominees. Congratulations, Scotty!

Scotty McCreery Shares Pictures From Dominican Republic Charity Trip
By: Amy Sciarretto

Instead of chilling out in his native Garner, N.C. for the whole holiday season, Scotty McCreery headed to the Dominican Republic for a bit to personally deliver gift boxes to needy and impoverished children. The selfless singer shared a couple pictures from his trip via Twitter … when he was able to get internet service, that is!

McCreery shared an adorable photo of him and a youngster (seen above), posting: “Here’s a pic of me and a little boy I gave a shoebox present to today!” Looks like Scotty brought some real joy into the heart of a child during the holidays.

McCreery was as active as he could be on Twitter during his trip, helping to spread the news about the charity he is supporting. He wrote: “Found some wifi at lunch.. Haha. Such an incredible time already today! Gave out boxes n had the chance to donate a guitar to the church!”

He also shared another photo from his trip, saying: “Great day here in the DR w/ operation Christmas child! Here’s one of the little boys who got a slinky in his box today!”

McCreery partnered up with Operation Christmas Child, which is the world’s largest Christmas project. The goal was to deliver gifts to 8.5 children over the holiday season. Here’s to hoping the organization achieved its goal with a little help from an ‘Idol.’
