Christmas Is Coming Around Again for Scotty McCreery

Scotty McCreery is in a holiday state of mind and ready to talk a little Christmas. At 19, he still has a touch of youthful enthusiasm about the pending holiday season. But what’s really putting the bow on this particular year is his new Christmas album,Christmas With Scotty McCreery. The album features Scotty’s unique and refreshing take on seasonal standards such as “Let It Snow,” “Jingle Bells,” “O Holy Night” and others. "I’m really blessed that the label supported me with this," Scotty says. "It’s been about a year since the first album, and I was itching to get some new music out. So, it felt right to have a Christmas record."

    Music Review

A Country Colt Learns to Prance

Scotty McCreery at the Beacon Theater

    By BEN RATLIFF

    Published: November 25, 2012

The central sound of Scotty McCreery is something like a deep “yeah” without the “y,” and it was the first one he made on stage at the Beacon Theater on Friday afternoon. (“Eaahhhhhhow y’all doing tonight New York!”) It connotes ease, security, gravity and mystery, and finds idiomatic equivalents in the phrase “might as well” and a lopsided smile.

It is a low-register rattle of the vocal cords shifting in and out of a tone. It flickers between singing and what speech analysts call a vocal fry, and Mr. McCreery uses it to lead toward or away from his other favorite effect: a short, quiet melismatic roll. This two-part device connects some of the greatest slow-tempo singers in country music — Merle Haggard, Keith Whitley, Randy Travis. It creates a wall of unknowability, but it’s also a power move, the sound of a man trying to establish his dominion.

And it can be a form of resistance. Mr. McCreery, from Garner, N.C., is 19, a freshman at North Carolina State, and still has about a quarter-tank’s worth of unconditional love from the young female fans he gathered by winning “American Idol” two seasons ago. They were there at the Beacon, screaming a little at the swells, crying a little when he sang a concerned mother’s words in the songs “Letters From Home” and “Dirty Dishes.” He has made two records since his victory: “Clear as Day,” full of summer-vacation love songs, and “Christmas With Scotty McCreery,” a holiday record so unconcerned with cool that it is in fact kind of cool. He probably should be thinking about innuendo, controversy and base broadening but is still working on his gentlemanly affect and telling fish-out-of-water “Idol” anecdotes that end with him proclaiming himself country to the bone.

  2. So his show at the Beacon — a Hurricane Sandy benefit that donated $5,000 to the Christian relief organization World Vision, and that started at 5:30, early enough for some of his fans and their moms to be home by dinner — felt heartening. Here’s a guy who shines a steady beam. Here’s a guy fronting a trebly and efficacious little country band, heavy on Telecasters and steel guitar, a guy who knows what he likes and won’t be distracted. He was dull, but dull with conviction, definition and finish.

He did not practice the eye pops and sideways microphone technique that impressed “Idol” judges in early May 2011. Those were effective, and weird, but a temporary aberration of a serious person. He’s not quite appealing to record collectors, but to the extent that he is responsible for his own repertory, he is doing a version of that, something about getting close to the tastes of one’s father and perhaps one’s grandfather.

Outside of his album tracks he sang songs from the early to mid-’90s: “The Dance,” by Garth Brooks, a silver-lining reflection after a breakup; “Check Yes or No,” by George Strait, about a man who feels uxurious 20 years after his wedding (reminder: Mr. McCreery is 19); and “T-R-O-U-B-L-E,” by Travis Tritt, a sexy argument for abstinence. He sang “That’s All Right,” Elvis Presley’s first single; he assumed a young Elvis stance to sing it. He sang the early 20th-century folk anthem “Man of Constant Sorrow,” leaning on the drone notes hard and well. Next to Pia Toscana, the stagy and skilled “Idol” contestant who joined him as a guest for a shuffle-rhythm, rockabilly “Holly Jolly Christmas,” Mr. McCreery was a gargoyle of stoicism. “Isn’t she beautiful?” he asked the audience. (Polite applause.) “Isn’t he handsome?” she gamely replied. (Screams.)

The only hint of a possible changed future lay in the encore, a song he performed during his “Idol” season, Montgomery Gentry’s “Gone”: more rock than country. There was a recorded house-shaking explosion sound after the lyrics “gone like a soldier in the civil war,” and on the chorus Mr. McCreery screamed the words, betraying his own steadiness and scorching the air. It felt strange: a whole different temperament, a more vengeful person. I’d like to see who that is, if only for a minute. But I’d rather see further refinements of the persona Mr. McCreery has already established. I sense more behind the wall.

    1. This is a good article. I hope Scotty has songs like mentioned above in his next album. He does an amazing job on all his songs and my favorites are cover songs, his Elvis, his Trouble, his Gone........... he's heading to absolute perfection in his music artistry...... can't wait.

    2. I mean I really support all of Scotty and especially his Christmas album, but just meant to add how much I enjoy his "rockers" too. Love all Scotty's work.

    3. Excellent article ...so true to Scotty's outstanding talent! Guess that's why this fan is just a little disappointed in the choice of
Scotty images used in new video. First of all, wonder how many 19
year old young adults would relish having so many childhood photos publically exposed?! Scotty has earned the right to be beyond those selections that weren't even used in his first ILUTB video... Secondly, the images didn't match any of the lyrics possibly with the exception of a young Scotty's choir appearance....Scotty is tops
in my book. I wish him much success with finding THE song with an
outstanding video. P.S. Also appreciate Todd Cassetty and his efforts to help Scotty's career.

  4. So many people are second guessing why Scotty made this video at all and why he made it with this content. As I see it, the message of this song is, "Let the love in". Scotty has shared his private world with us to exemplify the joy we will have when we love our family as shown in his photo collage, the happiness we will experience when we love others with clips from the Dominican Republic, and the inner peace we receive when we love our Lord with scenes from his own involvement with his church. Scotty's "Hallelujah" says it all. He has sent us a very powerful message in his most adorable way.

    2. I , too, love this video. It's like a Christmas card to me from Scotty and his family. It reminds me of the cards I get from family and friends with letters or pictures enclosed. I still write a personal message inside the cards I send wishing the best for all for the holiday and the New Year. This is what this video says to me. The song is full of hope for a brighter tomorrow. It also shows Scotty's love of the holiday growing up and how, as a young man, he "pays that love forward" to those less fortunate. It reminds me to be thankful for the blessings in my life and be compassionate to those in need. And before the naysayers jump on my reply. let me just say I didn't have the easiest of Christmases growing up as my Dad died on December 28 when I was 10 years old. So I have seen first hand the sadness that can accompany that time of year. But I prefer to dwell on hope and love. This is, after all, the reason for the season. "Merry Christmas everybody!"

  20. I read all the comments here, and decided everyone said it all....then I watched the video again.........and a few things came to my mind. Scotty is such a serious, focused individual. It will serve him greatly throughout his career. It already has, re: his successful pitching in high school. Even his catching the 'fake snow' with his mouth after winning American Idol. Just focusing on 'something' when life seems to get a bit out of control. Next to my own family, he is my most favorite person in the world. I have so enjoyed (as the rest of you) being part of his career, and with this video, feeling an actual part of this amazing family. So much love..................

His management, his band, his family and all of us are so proud of you Scotty and 3:47 you said it right he is sooo serious about it all since winning and like he said his ready to show the world, yeah American Idol gave him his start, but now its up to him to make it work and his showed the world already that his career means the world to him. As he says "ITS ALL GOOD" his most famous words, LOVE IT he is going to make it work and SCOTTY MCCREERY "We are so Proud like she said above we do feel like you and your family are part of ours from day one. ILYTB SCOTTY.

  23. I love the album but I think this may be the best song on it for a single for the holidays even though I LOVE "Christmas In Heaven" ".Christas Comin'Round Again" has such a wonderful message but with a upbeat tempo especially with the "Hallelujah". I find it playing over and over in my mind. Just a thought !!!
