Heavenly Assurances: The youngest male winner of American Idol shares a tale of divine intervention.

By Scotty McCreery, Garner, North Carolina

Last year, at 17, I became the youngest male winner ofAmerican Idol. My faith helped me get there. Why do I believe that? Because of the awesome things God has done...like this one unbelievable moment during the taping of the show.
As one of the top three contestants, I got to put on an outdoor concert in my hometown of Garner, North Carolina, in front of 30,000 fans. Folks there are like family to me.
Wednesday nights I’d often Skype with my church youth group from First Baptist Church of Garner. Choirs and Sunday schools sent me hundreds of cards. “Good luck, Scotty!” they wrote. “We’re praying for you!” I couldn’t wait to perform for them.
Then a couple nights before the concert I watched the weather report. Ninety-five percent chance of thunderstorms, torrential downpours—right at showtime! My first concert ever was headed for a rainout.
I grabbed my Bible, flipped it open at random and instantly my eyes fell upon a verse. Immediately, I felt an awesome sense of peace. It was like God was speaking to me.
Lord, I’m trusting you whether it rains or not. Please just let everyone enjoy the show.
The morning of the concert, thousands of people crowded around the outdoor stage. It was hot, humid, overcast. Rain seemed inevitable. “Maybe we’ll have to cancel,” I overheard a producer say. But I kept thinking about the verse I’d read.
Somehow, the rain held. Right before I went on, the sun broke through the clouds. I performed under patches of a bright blue sky. Garner went wild. I was from the best town in the whole U.S. of A. By the end of the concert I was floating on a cloud.
Just as we loaded the last piece of equipment the skies opened. Rain poured down. That verse I’d turned to before the concert? Amos 4:7—“I withheld the rain from you.”

  1. Just awesome Scotty. If God is in it nobody can stop it from happening. You have a "God given" voice and God is using you in so many ways. You have been such an inspiration to me. Nothing is going to stop what God has in store for you no matter what forces comes against you. I have known since the first time I saw you on AI that you had "something special" that few people acquire in a lifetime. May God continue to bless you as you continue to trust in him!!!

  4. Beautiful is the word for this article. Noone could tell it like Scotty. He just touches you just like Jennifer says with his songs he can sing them just like his telling a story. Well this was one of those in my eyes I can just close them and you can just feel so much love in this article . I said since day one God is watching over you, you are something special and he knew that from the start. This article is so inspiring to me this young man is so much like my husband who past away with cancer his verses he put out there and my husbands was Scotty's favorite, '"I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me ". He loved that verse and that verse has stayed with Scotty throughout his idol year and it is just with him everyday. God knew Scotty had so much to give back to his family friends and his fans. He touches me everyday with that beautiful voice, the love he gives and the Hope that he has to go through each day and like my husband told me before he passed to "live one day at a time" I really think Scotty does that he knows that God is there to take care of him no matter what. Scotty you are one in a million because their is noone in the world like you, you are Scotty and no body is going to tell you any different, only you and GOD:):):) God Bless you and your family because you have blessed us. Just beautiful. ILYTB

    1. I too believe Scotty is a very special young man with God given talent. I believe that God is using Scotty to inspire people and help them heal. If you are the lady from Kentucky who wrote the touching comment after Scotty's Relay for Life ad on Oct. 11, I felt that God wanted me to share your story with Scotty. I had the opportunity to meet Scotty at the Best Buy in Garner on Oct. 28 for the cd signing of his Christmas albumn and I put a copy of your comment in his hand and told him I thought this was something he would like to read. I felt God had told me to share this with Scotty.

  7. I knew from the first audition that Scotty was special. He has a GOD-given talent that is meant as a magnet to draw people to him/and HIM. I told my family, "You remember this boy, he is going to win". He has filled my heart with love each and every time I hear him sing. That in itself is special, but what I see is a very special light glowing around him. He is an old soul and here for an express purpose. I cannot say what, but know in my heart that he is GOD-sent. That beautiful soul did not get here by accident. Sorry to sound so dramatic, but this has been a strong feeling since I first laid eyes on him at sixteen auditioning for American Idol.

  8. Oh!!Scotty when I think you can't bless my heart anymore than you already have, you go and do it again. Just what I needed for today. The Lord is using you in a mighty way, please keep it up. I have faith that you will. God Bless You.

I cannot put in to words the joy I get every day listing to Scotty voice and example he is setting each day.

  10. If you also watch that concert on you tube, he also tells that story to the crowd before the end. Its awsome.

  11. For me, when he told that story on stage at homecoming was probably the most profound moment experienced with Scotty; that and the way he responded to his own behavior in regard to the kid (JC ?) during Hollywood wk. I can not imagine anyone watching either of those moments wihtout crying, but every single time I watch the Homecoming video or now read this article, I simply can not do it with out crying. Wonder if I ever will. Saying "It's a God Thing" was common statement for me with my friends and when Scotty said that and told the story, the facets turned on and story still has the same effect. Okay enough, no more crying tonight. Just not in the mood.

  14. So there is a article in Country People Magazine I have never seen that magazine. I go buy Country Weekly every time it comes out. Yes and the article in it is good as well what is the one in Country People Magazine? We love reading everything about Scotty so I would love to see it. I just wish they would have some of his newer pictures in there he has so many and they always use his older ones he is so much more mature in the new ones, he just keeps getting better looking everyday.Yes I cried also seeing his homecoming concert he was so young in that and he just has really grown as an artist. Love it and he did handle that with maturity at hollywood week and oh my goodness who wouldn't have cried I couldn't hold the tears back. I just love Scotty and no matter what he does this old girl will be with him no matter how old I Get. HA!!!!ILYTB

  16. Scotty You are such an inspiration to your generation, they need someone like U to
lead the way to Jesus. You are such a joy, and I love your God given beautiful voice. GOD is not finished with U yet, he have many, many more blessings for U and the people lives you touch. I pray that GOD will anoint you with a fresh anointing on your life. Peace be still over you and your family and friends. To GOD be the glory. Grace be unto U and our LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. Keep on eating that Rhema word of GOD. People are trying to come aganist U in so many ways, but they cannot keep a good man down, thanks be unto GOD that gives you the victory. Love U Scotty and your family and friend.

  17. I love Scotty so very very much, but he is not anointed by God.And he is not some god. He is a wonderful young man who has been blessed with a great voice. We all have talents or gifts, not necessarily in the entertainment field. Areas we may excel in, maybe in what field of work we choose, ex. medical people, some excel in teaching, some as extending charity and kindnesses and so many other areas. We need to find what our gift is and use it accordingly and then God blesses us accordingly.Scotty is definitely using his gift properly and is bringing praise to his God. But he isn't some god and he wouldn't want to be treated as such. He is too humble to want that kind of treatment. I fully agree that he is one of the best examples out there for his generation. We do need Scotty McCreery.

    2. 1:31 you really should let people express how they view cotty in their own way and in yours .

    3. 1:31: I so appreciate your perspective. It makes me bit uncomfortable to hear some put Scotty in some position above others. Kinda like, let's not be adding on to Holy Trinity here. I too belive that God blesses everyone with a special purpose in life. We are all gifted by him and some of us are fortunate enough to seek, find and do God's will (purpose) for our lives. We're all God's kids with important roles to fill. My belief is that while we are not born into equal circumstances, we're all born with equal access to God. Scotty is an inspiration to others no doubt, but hopefully to inspire all to reach for their own true calling as well. Scotty is very fortunate to have been born into a family who has nurtured him to become what God intended rather than some parents who seek to raise children according to what they as parents think best. Really admire Mr. Mike cause he didn't force Scotty into baseball but encouraged and supported him toward God's will, not his own. Mrs. Judy as well. They are such a blessed family and I think they know it's by Grace of God, not some special annointment. Also agree that Scotty doesn't want to be seen as superior to others. As long as each of us are here in life school we all have things we still need to learn and Scotty is no different in that regard; although, he does seem to understand that at young age. I hear many give much "special" credit to Scotty for acknowledging Christ in his life, and while I certainly respect him for that as well, he's not the only young kid doing that these days. I think more and more it's becoming more common for kids who are fortunate enough to be led properly to acknowledge God openly. It's pretty much what we're all supposed to do anyway. I've read some of Scotty's friends twitter accounts, and most seem to make acknowledgement of importance of God in their lives. Appears they too are seeking to find and live according to God's purpose. Some callings may not APPEAR so grand, but all are equally important. A little off topic, but this made me think of something read at Scott Erickson's twitter: He said he walked out (or in) somewhere and girls started screaming and yelling , then wrote hummm....wrong Scott. I thought it was cute and that it must be humbling hanging with Scotty at times. My two cents and so enjoyed your's 1:31.

  18. Actually, I believe Scotty is annointed by God to be doing what he is doing. The word "annointed" I think is misunderstood. Scotty has, I believe, been hand-picked by God to be an example for this generation, that you really can "do all things through Christ, who strengthens me" and that you don't have to drink and party to have fun and enjoy your life, and that God is Good!! Being annointed just means that you have been given that special "gift" to do what God has put you on earth to do, and Scotty knows this. He is having an influence on people just by being who he is in Christ and what he is doing in his life -- recording, doing concerts, going to college, studying and writing papers, doing interviews, hanging with his friends, trying to maybe even date someone...oh, my goodness!! How does he do it all? And he always seems to be so happy and enjoying every minute of this grueling life with so many things to do and so many places to go. He handles it all with such grace!! How many high profile teenagers can do all this at once!?! God has given him the "annointing" to do it and has given him the peace and the joy in his heart to know that he is doing exactly what God wants him to do!! When some of us say Scotty is annointed by God, that is what we mean. Not weird or mysterious, but it is the calling on his life, why he was born and given this special voice, and Scotty is well aware of this, I believe. Like Scotty always says, "It's all good." We, including me, all could take a lesson from Scotty's example. I am so proud of him, I could just bust wide open!!

  19. 7:28AM - Thank you. I couldn't have expressed it any better. Not everyone will agree, but that's okay. We all will agree that Scotty is the best thing to happen for a long time in a troubled mixed up world, right? God instilled (like that word better??) in him a strong desire to entertain the masses from a very young age. Scotty is doing just that. I firmly believe he is an old soul.

  20. I know that Jesus Christ is anoited and some of his followers, if you read your Bible. Not everyone is anoited, but that is your perogative to believe. Definitely he is an example and like one said, there are a lot of other young people who are praising and glorifying God. I think the whole point is not to think of him as some kind of God. He is using his gift in helping others. I am involved in a ministry, but I am not anoited, I know. He is pretty darn near perfect I have to say. This isn.t to start an argument. We having differing opinions, that's all.

    1. Oh, my goodness!! I totally realize that Scotty is just a human teenage boy. That is what is so amazing to me about him. But, if he was some sort of "god" (which he of course is not) we would not need to keep him in our prayers!! But, believe me, we do need to keep him in our prayers!! Just because he is "annointed" or "called" or "given a special gift", does not make him any sort of "god". Sampson in the Bible was called of God and given the special gift of superhuman strength, and look what happened to him!!

    2. Note to 2:32 and 2:00 comment below @ 3:35 was in response to 7:28 sorta, not your's as I tend to lean toward ur perspective, but do agree we all share differing views on this just like everything else.

      Delete
  21. See your point and respectfully disagree a bit. Do mean that sincerely as I don't profess the key to divine knowledge. Don't view Scotty as "the best thing to come along in a troubled world" There are people doing good things all the time and Scotty is one of many: like troops away from home & family, fighting for our freedom with little appreciation at times. Right now I know a family with significant financial stress and a chronically ill child. Yet, despite their own adversity they are sharing what little they have, at added burden to themselves in order to help some in worse shape. Can't see Scotty's gift as better(or best): just more publicized. I've been greatly impressed by this family and know they give without attention, expectations of any return and at unnecessary hardship to themselves. A special few get big attention for big gifts, while tiny offerings at great sacrifice go unnoticed. Few would trade places with this family or our troops, while many would jump at chance for Scotty's responsiblities instead. I realize to those given much, much is expected and I commend Scotty for intent to benefit others and taking responsiblites seriously. I'm sure he sacrifices as well. However many give daily without near the financial compensation, personal assistance, energy, health or public accolades of fans. Scotty is definitely one of the good guys, but I keep him in a relative perspective. BTW, I saw on weather map the day of HC and there wasn't a dry area within 6 states except for Garner NC so no doubt Scotty is on the God track.

  26. Yes 11:17 that was me from Kentucky. I am soo touched by you telling Scotty about my article its the truth how he has blessed me since my husband passed away. I know he is a young man but hey we never know who is looking at us and is going to be blessed by what someone does. He is one amazing young man that is a living proof of someone like me because that story i wrote is the truth and maybe one of these days I can also meet him in person but I did send him several letters that I had written and didn't get to meet him I was unfamiliar with the meet and greet if you have to sign up when you order tickets or what. I wonder what he thought you know curious but hey Thank You it has made me feel so good that I touched your heart with what I wrote. I have played Christmas in Heaven over and over again. Thank You so Much again for sharing that with me about giving my article to him that really means a lot. Kentucky Fan ILYTB Scotty.

  29. I have never heard him say he is one good looking dude!!! He is of course beautiful. He is maturing in his looks so much. Could definitely model clothes. Maybe some clothing designer will want to use him and also have his on line of clothing down the road. I think Scotty is marketable in many areas, not just music, but clothing, as a spokesman for any number of products or organizations. He really handles himself well. I have always been impressed with the way he conducts himsel even in Idol. Seeing the shambles LA made of the Red Carpet Interviews for The Boot makes me so much more proud. And to think some have said she was more mature than him in the past. That was said by some people during Idol. Not hardly.Scotty is so classy! ILYTTMAB
