Raleigh, N.C. — Scotty McCreery came home Monday night to the arena where he attended concerts as a kid. After the first of two sold-out shows at Dorton Arena, McCreery and his band gathered backstage for ribbing and memories. "Oh my goodness, it was incredible," he gushed. "The fans were great. I used to come to concerts here when I was a kid so actually to be on the stage was pretty cool." Bass player Nathan Thomas was the first to speak up about the effect McCreery has on his (mostly female) fans. "I half split my time between looking at which girl is crying and looking at Scotty. It's kind of fun," he said. The American Idol winner, North Carolina State University freshman and self-described "low-key dude" deftly balances his work in the classroom against the duties of a country star. "Today was weird because I had class and then the show," McCreery said. "My mind was all whacked out. I was writing a speech and then, an hour later, I was coming to Dorton Arena to sing. But hey, it was cool by me."  On campus, McCreery says, he is just one of the thousands of students. On stage, it is a whole different world. "As an artist that's the kind of reaction you want," he said of the screaming fans. "It means they're listening to your songs and buying your records, and that keeps me on the road so, you know, it's a good reaction to see. I love it!"

For members of McCreery's band, who have been with him for just about a year, the concerts at the North Carolina State Fair are their second taste of the Garner native's hometown fans. Drummer Joey Sanchez recalled a concert last fall at Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek as his initiation to Scotty mania. "We walked out, and there's 18 to 20,000 people just going nuts," Sanchez said. "I've worked for a lot of people that will never have a fraction of the success Scotty's had, and he's more humble than probably anyone I've ever worked with," he added. Each of the band members echoed that impression. "He's the same person on-stage as he is off-stage, and that's really refreshing because a lot of other artists aren't like that," said Justin Ward. "I feel honored to be singing with the guy who won 'American Idol,'" said Jeff Harper. "I mean, what more could you ask for than be to singing backup for that guy?" Guitarist Matt Reviere said McCreery's clean-cut reputation makes him proud to call him a colleague and friend.  "It's really great when you're walking through the airport or something with Scotty and people are recognizing him," he said. McCreery turned the compliments back on the band, calling them "some of the best players around." Clearly, the group enjoys their voyage together. "We all have a sense of humor. Take a ride on our bus one night and you'll see," McCreery said. McCreery's tour manager, Raleigh native Mike Childers, also mentioned the chemistry that keeps them centered. "Scotty is great. His family is great. That goes without saying because of the way he is. The guys are great," Childers said. All are playing and laughing their way along the ride of a lifetime. Childers said he was in the audience when McCreery auditioned for "American Idol." Former contestant Danny Gokey was trying to get the crowd excited, saying, "The next 'American Idol' could be sitting right up in these stands." Childers recalled scoffing at the comment. "And a year later, I'm hanging out with that "American Idol" winner," he said.

Christmas CD recorded in August McCreery also marked the release of his Christmas album Tuesday. "We did this album in the middle of August and it was 110 degrees in Nashville. It was right during a heat wave, and we were singing 'Let it snow' and all kinds of stuff," he said.

  2. I couldn't wait............so I didn't.....I downloaded the Christmas CD from ITunes. I couldn't get home tonight (do night nannying on the other side of town from where I live, so I just go home on weekends) so I couldn't get my CD's from the mail, even if they did come today. This is just THE BEST!! Scotty's voice is so pure. Mary Did You Know put me in a whole new dimension. How he can go from sounding like Frankie to Elvis all on the same record is amazing. And still sound like Scotty, all the while. I love it.......I almost feel guilty wanting to play it over and over and it isn't even Thanksgiving yet!!

  7. Hey, this is the best interview. Its amazing how his band members and even the bus driver all feel about Scotty they have all come together as a family and I mean that with his immediate family too. Mike, Judy and Ashley are right in there with em all. I think That says it all, if Scotty can keep his band together like Brad Paisley has, he will go far just like Brad. Scotty says his learned a lot from Brad and it shows already and can ya'll imagine in a few years down the road how great Scotty will be , because his already the Best. Dagumn as Scotty says, his one amazing dude now. Don't you just love his words he uses its all Scotty and love it that they can all say he is just so down to earth , and they all have a great sense of humor and you know they all need that. Guys, THANK YOU. ILYTB

    2. I'm so shocked to see how much more Aldean is expected to sell. HUGE difference. Has anybody heard his album? I just don't get it, so what is that like quadruple platinum the first wk out? All I know of is double platinum. How high do certifications of albums go or does it just not matter when one ears a bizillion dollars? Jeez. I gotta go check this out anyway. Don't get Jason's appeal anyway, let alone his Christmas album?

    3. I've never cared for Jason's voice, from day one, I always turn it off if I hear him on radio or anywhere. He seems to be a sweet guy, but to me, sings through his nose. Can't understand how he is liked so much.

    4. Okay, my goof. I don't actually keep up with Aldean; mostly just read recent controversy; thus my confusion. I was thinking somehow that all the talk about Jason's album was referring to a CMAS album he was putting out which of course sounded a little strange anyway. So now knowing his new release is just another aldean album, projected sales make a little more sense. Still hard to believe Aldean is that hot right now, but so they say he is. I was thinking how in worlkd would 400k people buy a CMAS album by Aldean...Silly me. Anyway, yes interview was very good. I would like to hear more from band, more joint interviews and to know more about band members. Someone said Matt was hot, I had noticed that as well, but when he talks he sounds different than what I would expect from appearance and body language on stage...like ultra conservative...anyway I may have seen wedding band on finger...not that I was looking just caught a glimpse (seriously, lol)....I'm still wondering if the guys just work for Scotty exclusively or play elsewhere as well.

  11. You see this interview and you see how great Scotty is with his band.Humility is definitely a trait they all appreciate. Some have worked with other artists but Scotty has won these guys over, like everyone who meets him. Hope they stay together for a long time. I would think they all recognize his talent and that he will continue to soar.I just loved this interview and hearing from all of them. Nathan (with the Hat)I wondered how he felt because he doesn't seem to get the attention these others do sometime. He was cute, keeping his eye on Scotty and seeing which girl is crying! Cute. I wondered in the beginning if they'd really like being around such a clean cut kid,and such a young kid, since so much of country artists and bands love the drinking and partying songs. But you can really see they are a faimly. Love it and love them all.

  14. FYI 12:27pm In case you are still unable to view the NCStateFair videos....I typed in my browser youtube.com, when that page came up, I typed in at the top of that youtube page scottymccreery/ncstatefair - a list of at least ten videos came up to choose from. I clicked on one, watched then clicked on "back" and then clicked my original youtube.com request of sm/ncstatefair and then chose another video to watch, then repeated the process until I had viewed them all. Great videos, hope this helps you.

  15. At the Virtual Reality tour last week. We were waiting in the meet and greet line for Scotty and Matt his guitarist back up singer came out and sat down and visited with a group of people for like 30 minutes. I wanted to get a picture but it looked like a family visit and I didn't want to interrupt. He is really hot!!! They all seem to be so much like family.
