No Sappy Love Songs

Scotty McCreery Won’t Get Caught Up in ‘Sappy Love Songs’ on Next Album
By: Sterling Whitaker |

Scotty McCreery has had quite an impressive run recently, what with pitching his hometown baseball team into the playoffs and graduating high school. Oh, yeah — the 2011 ‘American Idol’ winner has also scored three Top 20 hits, his debut album ‘Clear as Day’ is certified platinum, and he’s currently on tour with Brad Paisley. McCreery even recently won his first CMT Music Award for USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year.

The 18-year-old singer is headed off to college in the fall, but he’ll continue his singing career — he promises.

“Oh, of course – this is what I want to do for the rest of my life,” McCreery tells Billboard in a new interview. “It’s getting to be… I don’t want to say a job, but it’s getting to be like that. I’m taking it seriously. But I love it.”

He adds, “I never wanted to sit behind a desk; that wasn’t me. I love entertaining. If I wasn’t on (‘Idol’) I would’ve tried to head to Nashville and make it the traditional way.”

As if he weren’t busy enough with his tour and upcoming college-level schooling, McCreery is also planning his second album. Although he’s known for songs like ‘I Love You This Big’ and ‘The Trouble With Girls,’ the young star wants to focus on more substance for his next outing, which he plans to start recording during tour breaks this summer. He’s already been sorting through songs for the project.

“I’m definitely seeing for this second album that people are really excited when they’re sending me songs,” McCreery notes. “I’m enjoying the songs I’ve been hearing. I just want people to really see me this time.

But one thing McCreery doesn’t want for his new release is a bunch of mushy love tunes. “I don’t want to get caught up in the sappy love songs; those are important, but I want them to get a feel for who I am as an artist and sing about real things in life,” he explains. “Hopefully we’ll get that with the songs and have some fun with it as well.”

The 18-year-old singer is particularly excited about getting to take a little more time to make a more personal album. “The first one I did was a little rushed, I didn’t get to enjoy it or get creative with it,” he acknowledges. “This one we’re going to take our time and really make a good album.”

He also popped up at Tim McGraw’s Charlotte concert last weekend, joining the superstar for ‘I Like It, I Love It’ to the delight of the fans. We can only hope the two will record a duet for McCreery’s new album

    1. Those "jaded" critics calling the songs on CAD "sappy" -- they are NOT "sappy" at all! Obviously they have touched so many people of all ages! And anyway, I love sappy songs! And I think ILYTB is going classic!

      Delete
    2. Ditto!!!...Especially about ILYTB!...Still my fave!! Also Please Remember Me!

    3. Karee, no critics called the songs on CAD sappy and we know there aren't any such songs on CAD! Scotty used that term, I think, to emphasize, that though he knows love songs are important, his main focus on his next album is something else! This is what I call 'suspense', like, 'whats he talkin about'! lol

    4. There were a few song reviews when the album first came out - but it doesn't really matter now because the album went Platinum and is still doing very well. Fact is, CAD was a rushed album and I think the next album will be awesome!

  2. I know Scotty will make wise choices and I'll love it no matter what he chooses. However, I wish he would sing at lease one song that really shows off his low range. Everyone loved that on AI and I didn't see much of that in his first album. I also have noticed that when he is in concert if he brings the range down a little it really gets the fans excited. Scotty you are amazing and I will be a fan forever. I love everything about you. Can't wait for more songs.

    1. I am sure everyone is in for a wonderful surprise with his next album! He and his team have more time to be creative now. CAD was rather rushed and recorded while he was on that AI summer tour. I am so excited!

    2. AI to that and I´m sure they make careful and wise choices. As to the low range on CAD: I´m sure with his first album they had to consider 10000 aspects to shut down the critics. They had to avoid too many bariton songs to avoid critics would call him a Josh turner wannabe. they had to show that he actually can sing deep bariton as well as high tenor- to shut up the idiots who´d doubt he had range (fans already knew he has )etc. And they succeeded in shutting the critic down. That´s why I think there´ll be more freedom to choose songs this time. Add to that the experience they´ve gotten (respons at concerts, from radio etc) and given more time and a matured voice - we are in for a treat, ladies and gents

    3. I agree. And Scotty also has a very clear idea of the kind of songs/lyrics he wants to sing. I love his voice - he has a very distinct tone that is all his! And all that fuss about "range" - really! We all know he has range - I think 2 years ago he himself was not sure he had that range, and he pushed himself to see just how far he could go - and WOW!

As for critics, well, I guess that's what they like to do, criticize. But despite their not-so-great reviews, the fans won Scotty 3 MAJOR country awards! I did not agree with a lot of the reviews on the songs on his CAD album. Oh, and CAD went PLATINUM!

    4. I think that critics have "shut up" after seeing just how good Scotty is performing live -- and the incredible audience reaction/response! As someone on the tour tweeted, the arena is already packed before the show starts and the screaming is just deafening when Scotty appears on stage and in between his songs and even during his songs!

      Delete
    5. Not to mention the McCreerians response to anything negative about "our boy!" ;)

      Delete
    6. Yes! As McCreerians we can attack like a pack of angry pitbulls when those critics say anything bad about our boy. haha.
They're starting to learn their lesson.

      Delete
    7. Ditto to all!!!

    8. Let´s enjoy those critical voices are silenced and so many have changed their mind and gained respect. Let´s just enjoy our little superstar does great and that everything turned out splendid.

  4. As much as I love CAD, I can't imagine how much I will ABSOLUTELY ADORE the next album. Scotty is one in a million, I don't know too many other country artists whose fan base includes everyone from very young to very old (like me)....I loved the comment from the guy who sang the patriotic song at Indian Ranch yesterday. Something like " I felt like I was at an Elvis concert" with all the screaming and crying girls. Scotty is just a very special, charismatic young man....and what a voice!!!!

OFF TOPIC: Please don't forget to vote on the CMT Top 20 POLL....here's the site info:

    http://m.cmt.com/top20pollresult.rbml

CMT says this poll helps determine the next weeks top 20. When I last voted, WTT was 3rd. Let's see if we can get him to #1. Thanks.

    3. When you get to the site, click "vote again" and it will allow you to check on your artist and click "vote" at the bottom. it will then bring up the current percentage of votes for each artist. When I checked it just now, Scotty is #4 below Keith, Carrie and Lady A.

  8. I so agree to the necessary of some love songs on his next album. His voice is just made for songs like The Dance, PRM etc. And all of us fangirling NEED him to sing love songs.

  10. yes his next album must add love song, Elvis Plesley is famous and make girls crying and screaming because of his love song.

  11. I agree with all of you above, Scotty has to sing some love songs for his next album, his voice sounds especially good in 'The Dance', 'PRM'. And a lot of songs that hit the charts are to some extent love songs. We all love to hear love songs and people can relate very well to love songs because at some point in our lives, we find love, we experience love. So I really pray and hope that he will sing some nice love songs. Also, I notice in most of his concerts, the girls scream especially for 'TTWG'. Elvis sang loads of love songs, Garth sang love songs, Alan Jackson sang love songs. JMO. Still love you Scotty!

  12. I really hope Scotty reads all these comments from his fans or at least I hope his parents or Ashley will, because it's his fans who are going to support him and buy his albums. I hope he doesnt just go ahead and cut an album based on what I read above. He has to include some love songs, after all his fan base has a lot of young girls and that's the time when they can relate. I kind of felt that a lot of us really like to see 'YMTLG' as his 3rd single, but he chose 'WTT'. Not sure whether it was his choice or his management's choice, seems more like his since he always mention about how much it meant to him. Not really sure whether it's doing well enough though.

    1. In reply to 11:01 PM I'm not sure that Scotty was the one who chose WTT. From what I remember and I may be wrong I think that the radio helped to influence this choice, I know Scotty really liked this song but I think that I remember reading comments where his parents and Scotty felt like YMTLG would be a good choice for the next single. I'm sure that there were several factors that influenced the choice for his single.

  13. calm down I'm sure he will have love songs on his next album . its just not going to be his main focus. he wants some upbeat fun songs as well. he never said he wasn't going to put any love songs on his next album.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Scotty never said that he was not going to sing love songs. Scotty said that he was not going to sing any "sappy love songs," and because he has not sung any sappy love songs so far, I do not expect that he will do so in the future. I know that Scotty will continue to have powerful love songs on his second album. In addition to powerful love songs, I hope Scotty will have a powerful patriotic song and a powerful Christian song plus some fun songs that rock the house.

    2. Cumulus radio in Atlant, Ga owns a lot of radio stations of all genres in the country. I have tried emailing them and called their Programming Director, but got nowhere!! I don't know why they have D.J.'s anymore because they can't do anything and they don't care (at least the Cumulous D.J.'s) It is a really ridiculous. I stopped listening to our new and only station here in Stamford, CT. They just think it is funny that a fan would like to request a song or an artist. The other Country station (not owned by Cumulus) in upper CT does play Scotty.

Our station owned by Cumulus also promotes their own singing competition hosted by LeeAnn Rimes so not sure if that has something to do with it, but they do play Carrie and other former idols. Check to see if your station is owned by Cumulus Radio.

    1. Maybe some of these stations are syndicated radio - meaning, they have to play what's on the playlist provided the stations. So if Scotty's songs are not on the playlist, they won't have the songs. It's not like before when you could just call and request and the dj would look for the song and play it.

      Delete
    2. Yes check to see if your local station is owned by the big box radio network of Cumulus in Atlanta, GA. What a lousy company!!

      Delete
    3. It's pretty much the same with television - syndicated networks/channels and you get the same shows over and over for months without end!

The younger generation fanbase don't really care too much about radio because they have all their music on their ipods or phones and computers. I used to listen to the radio especially while driving, but not anymore because the songs (in all genres) are awful. So I have my cds or ipod instead. I practically don't know what the good radio stations are anymore.

  19. There a bunch of jerks there a click that push who they want ,and refuse to play those they don't want to,and it all started when Scotty was up for the first award. They pulled the trouble with girls off the stations, and they started pushing for Hayes ,and Gilbert. It only got worse because he beat them out three times without there help.and they can't stand it.plain down right jealousy of his success. They know WTT is a great song ,and they don't want Scotty to climb the chart they don't want him to get a No1. hit.I just seen the concert live ,and it is awesome ,best song ever.Hayes never worked his way in country music his album came out the same time as Scotty's he only 20. where did he work his tail off in bars,he didn't,and neither did GILBERT,his album was out there forever, and didn't go anywhere. He made his, money writing songs,.They been riding on Scottys coat tail to get there name out there, and it started with the awards

    ReplyDelete
  20. IA the lack of radio play can be very upsetting to all us Scotty fans and yes, there´s a lot of jealousy and unjustified treatment out there. But let´s focus on the advance and there IS advance these last days in spins, bullets and he gets great respons wherever he visits radio. And above all his album is still selling after so many months and now we even see a nice boost after he started being out there again and he´s getting one positive review after the other. He is doing real fine. It´s all good.

    1. I agree!! What seems to be the case is, people don't just want WTT, they want his whole album! Nice!

      Delete
    2. All the songs on his CAD album are potential hit songs if given the required radio airplay. I think radio wanted an upbeat song, even though the fans were requesting ILYTB or TTWG or DD or BOTG! But, who says you have to put out an upbeat song to have a hit!? Really. And yet the album went Platinum and is still selling!

Scotty is doing good and he is learning more and more about performing live on stage and interacting with the crowds. He will find his own niche, performance-wise -- he's young, but it will happen.

      Delete
    3. That´s it. The boost after his performances show that people hear him sing songs from the album and ( like us fans) they want all of them, not just one single. Though the teens are the "single download" generation and they did buy downloads of ILYTB and TTWG. Maybe those romantic songs appealed more to them. Anyway, WTT single IS selling better now since the music vid release. All in account it is more profitable for an artist to sell albums than singles. Let´s be happy

      Delete
    4. You're absolutely right - teenagers are the "single download generation." Also, it's different now because of technology. Even if radio stations play a song and say it's a top song or hit song, that may not necessarily be true just based on radio airplay - you will find that a lot of the fans download the hit songs off iTunes or other Internet sites. Still, it would be great to hear Scotty's voice over the radio A LOT!

And I think WTT will do well. Imagine you a fan and watching the video, and then suddenly, omg, that's me in the video!

      Delete
    5. IA. Latest update on WTT sales: it keeps climbing on I tune single chart! With proper radioplay this song could def. make it. Radio play increase seems kind of up and down and down and up. But there´s hope and his radio visits will add to that

      Delete
  21. I also feel the same about the lack of radio airplay, but hey, what to do. If you recall, ILYTB got terrible reviews and look where this song is! Some say close to Platinum, but I'm pretty sure it has made platinum already. And what about the song, TTWG - there was practically no promo for this single and they just let it breathe on YouTube with the video - and look where that song is now! Both ILYTB and TTWG went Gold and the number of views on both videos keep increasing! Not to mention the entire album, CAD which, like you've said, is still selling. WTT is breathing on its own in the video.

The thing is, Scotty's debut album went Platinum so fast and everyone knows the songs and want a second album, which we already know will be released next year yet. Ergo this hectic summer tour of concerts. I'm just ready for more surprises!

On another note, I know people want him to sing upbeat songs, but I actually think his voice is more suited to ballads and maybe the "tempo" of Tim McGraw. I don't particularly like it when he performs T.R.O.U.B.L.E., but only because he has to practically strain his voice to hit that range at such a fast tempo and the song does not suit his voice. Actually wish he would pick a different upbeat song that is more suitable to his vocal range. He has this deep, warm, rich tone in his voice. When you sing straining your vocal chords away from your range, sometimes it strains your voice and this affects every other song you sing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ditto K.!!! I Agree completely!..I didn't like CAD much at first because of lack of his "deep warm, rich tone"!..Still love only a few of the songs.. ILYTB, DD, BOTG, OKG, BTT..I'm thinking also that ILYTB should be platinum by now!..Will it be announced, And will he get an award?..I worry about him straining his voice, too. Actually on some of his concert songs, it sounds a little strained sometimes!...Appreciate your great comments!...GS

    2. P.S...My fave now is Please Remember Me!..I hope he sings that on his next album. I wonder how the ratings are on that now?...It's about 500,K on Youtube!

    3. Everyone who hears him live just raves about his voice. (i hope one day I will!)

I think the quality of a recording on an iphone is limited, not to mention where in the person recording is located in the audience. I have watched different recordings from the save event and the sound was a bit different in each recording.

Hopefully, his family will look after his voice and not allow him to hurt it... that is his instrument after all.... and what a splendid instrument it is!! He is amazing and seems to only be getting better!

    4. wow 5:31 . you only liked a few songs on CAD .that's interesting I've never heard any of his fans ever say that just you the lone fan .

    5. to 9:21 PM - you make a point about the recordings - phones are limited in quality recording, although iPhones are pretty good compared to most - as long as he can catch up on sleep and have a day or 2 to relax - his summer schedule is really very hectic, especially the flying back and forth, here, there and everywhere -

i love all the songs on his CAD album, but of course i do have my favorites!

      Delete
    6. I have to agree with concern about his voice on songs like T R O U B L E. Hoping someone's got his back on that as well. lf he is going to cover Travis, I would much prefer to hear "Can I Trust You With My Heart"....loved that on AI. I like some upbeat stuff too, but love the "sappy love songs"...I think he might be trying a little too hard to live down the AI period of critics who said he was one-trick-pony/Josh Turner sound alike. Personally, I never felt that way, but hey, even if that were his only trick; it's a darn good one and works real well for me. I expect next album will have some songs that are of national/world relevance....like Alan Jackson's WWYWTWST or Martina's "I'm gonna love u through it" which could be great if he finds the right song....still hope he has some songs like PRM and those which showcase the low "lady killer" voice we all fell in love w/on AI. Love songs don't have to be sappy, but wonder what Scotty considers sappy...Can I trust u w/my heart, Brad's "Then" and JT's Wld u go w/me aren't sappy to me. He's riding so high right now, I think a love song that was Soctty's OWN wld push him over the top....but the upbeat stuff can be great also...and despite what he says about not being able to dance, the boy has the rhythm in his body and moves (or boot-scootin as Tyler called it) are becoming more natural for him as he gains confidence. I love it. Was watching Indian Ranch performance and contrasting his stage presence to AI...so much more confident now....remember when he stood straight and stiff as a stick and sang bit of The Dance in auditions....I still wanted to hear more of him singing that song. Now, when videos come up from concerts, I go to YMTLG and The Dance first and then ILYTB. I don't care for TTWG much but really liked it for the video choice. I too was hoping this last video wld be YMTLG...but he can't please everybody all the time as fans have different tastes.I just wish new album was coming out sooner...I still don't get this industry thing...esp. when artists like Carrie, Blake and Miranda pop out new songs/videos like crazy.

    7. 10:27, 5:31 was just stating an opinion and she is not a lone fan. I thought CAD offered a range of appeal to varying audiences; but there were only a few songs that suited my personal taste. It was probably best that album offered something for many different tastes, therefore it's logical that not everyone is going to necessarily love all songs on album. I rarely find that any of my favorite artist put out albums of all my favs; so I just purchase the one's that get closest to my preferences. I too was bit disappointed that first album didn't feature more of the deep rich baritone voice; but by same token, the pics of 5:31 are different than my pics and I don't see anything wrong with that. Love Scotty, love his voice but don't always love all his song selections. Sue me. I am also a huge Toby Keith fan and love most everything he has done, but if I never hear Red Solo Cup again it will be too soon....PPl can love Scotty, but some of us are just not necessarily going to love every song he does. And I really don't want to hear anymore about not being a "true Scotty fan", b/c my votes have counted for Scotty just like everybody else's. And I have done some serious power-voting and purchasing to support him.

  22. I would like to know if the fans that are having trouble across the country hearing Scotty on the radio - if their station is part of Cumulus? They are a Big Box Company who doesn't care about what is played on their stations. They run the same songs in ground hour after hour! They are terrible for any genre of music, especially Country. If there are any Scotty Fans from Atlanta you should get on their case and then he will be heard all over the country!!

    I would really appreciate it!!

  23. My family.and myself just seen him in concert on Saturday on the way to the shore, and Scotty has the best voice out of all the artist. The other acts have more lights, and the band perry has the three of them singing which helps there act,and of course Brad has the best visual animations that is different with every song.It is fantastic and that didn't cone overnight,I would say you have to put out a lot of money to put on a show like that he's been doing it for a long time.Scotty is just a beginner, and he is amazing live he d has the best voice out of them all. There were no notes off key,and trouble was awesome live the crowd loved him doing that song you have to see it live these videos do no justice at all.I seen a video of brad from that concert on the T.V,and he sounded awful it was so much better live.Scotty is so cute in person and ,his performance is outstanding, and his voice incredible
