Scotty McCreery: Album No. 2 Won't Get Too 'Sappy'

After getting his high school sheepskin and a new CMT Music Award (or USA Breakthrough Video of the Year), Scotty McCreery is happy to be able to turn music into his sole and full-time pursuit. "Oh, of course -- this what I want to do for the rest of my life," the 2011 "American Idol" champ, who helped pitch his Clayton, N.C., baseball team into the playoffs this season, told Billboard.com. "You've got to put in the work early to be able to do that for the next few years down the road. It's pretty intense. It's getting to be...I don't want to say a job, but it's getting to be like that. I'm taking it seriously. But I love it. I never wanted to sit behind a desk; that wasn't me. I love entertaining. If I wasn't on ('Idol') I would've tried to head to Nashville and make it the traditional way." McCreery has already made some waves in the country world. His debut album, "Clear As Day," is certified platinum and has spawned three Top 20 country hits -- including the current Top 5 smash "Water Tower Town." He's back out on the road now with Brad Paisley, but he's also ready to get to work on his second album. "We've gotten songs in... and starting to get in the mode of writing and stuff," McCreery says. "We've already got a few winners picked out I'm really excited about cutting. It's going to be fun. I like the process of making an album. The first one I did was a little rushed; I didn't get to enjoy it or get creative with it. This one we're going to take our time and really make a good album." McCreery predicts that he'll probably start recording during the summer, in-between concert dates, but he doesn't expect to release anything until 2013. "I'm definitely seeing for this second album that people are really excited when they're sending me songs," McCreery says. "I'm enjoying the songs I've been hearing. I just want people to really see me this time. I don't want to get caught up in the sappy love songs; those are important, but I want them to get a feel for who I am as an artist and sing about real things in life. Hopefully we'll get that with the songs and have some fun with it as well." While he was finishing up at high school McCreery was also paying attention to this year's "Idol" competition -- possibly, he says, a little too much. "It was like deja vu every week, like watching it from a totally new perspective," he says. "It was cool for me. I was pointing out things all the time, like seeing people behind the stage wearing all black who were my friends back in the day, or when the contestants were getting nervous. The people watching with me were trying to tell me to shut up, but I couldn't." And McCreery was happy to be part of "Idol's" 11th season, not only as reigning champ but as by recording a version of Tim McGraw's "Please Remember Me" that was used as the walk-off song for eliminated contestants. "It was cool getting to be a part of the show every week and still being connected to them and still get my name out there," he says. "It was cool for me; (the eliminated 'Idols') probably weren't happy to hear me singing, though. I did send (McGraw) a message when we were first cutting it, and he said 'Cool, man. Excited to hear it.' He was a great guy when I got to meet him for the finale last year."

  2. Hey, Hey, Hey - This does not work for me. I LOVE CLEAR AS DAY. I have spent the past 8 months purchasing CAD and voting my fingers off on every imaginable poll from dawn to dusk and all night long for CAD. I will *not* hear that it does not capture Scotty's artistic talent, that it is anything less than a masterpiece, or that its love songs are "sappy." I will be delighted if Scotty's second album is as dynamite as CAD, but talk about the second album should in no way diminish anything about CAD. No one should be swayed by the nasty comments of one miserable writer. CAD is a major incredible artistic accomplishment.

    1. I don't see anywhere in this article, where the writer swayed Scotty to say, he didn't want the album to be about sappy love songs... he also said they're important BUT he wants his fans to get a feel for who he is as an artist, and sing about real things. Not sure, exactly what that means, but I'm really excited to find out!!!

    2. If you notice that he has been including THE DANCE in his repertoire and he picked out PRM for the goodbye song in AI. So IMO, these are the type of songs that he would like to include in his next album...the songs that we enjoy listening and have caught our interest so much. In fact, the words of these two songs reverberate in my mind.

We do not know whether he really said the word "sappy" but I really dont care. What ever he wants to do with his next album, I will still buy. That only means that he is improving as an artist. He wants to be involved this time. Remember he wants to stay in the business for a long time. He wants to muster his craft. I will support him in any way. and all the more I admire him because he is doing the best he can to improve his carreer.

    3. In answer to 12:42, when I spoke "of the comments of one miserable writer," I was not referring to the writer of this particular article. I was referring to a writer who has alienated most Scotty fans by his caustic comments.

  3. PS - I realize that these were Scotty's words, yet Scotty should not be swayed in saying this by one lonely writer.

  4. The link did not work for me either. I copied and pasted in browser....no luck. I pasted it in Google next, no luck. Please, please, if it is not too much trouble, would you put the video itself here?

    1. The word "This" in "This does not work for me" refers to the comments about CAD, not about accessing the video. CLEAR AS DAY does deal with real things in life; the love songs are fantastic, not sappy; and the album showcases Scotty's artistic talent. Talk about a second album should in no way diminish CAD, which is a major artistic accomplishment.

I loved CAD and I´m looking forward to his second album which I´ll buy no matter what as I ´m confident Scotty´ll make great choices. If we´ll have to wait for spring 2013 for his next album I hope he´ll release a Christmas EP

  8. Ok with me if Scotty doesn´t want to do sabby love songs, but I hope he´ll do quality love songs like the Dance, PRM etc. You can see from the respons like in concerts, single sales and YT views that his love songs are in huge demand

  9. I think "sappy" was what early critics called the song ILYTB - if you recall, even the 3 judges said the same thing during AI10 Finale - Yet look how far this little song has come! I think it's going classic! And it is not sappy at all!

I think what Scotty means is that he did not have much time working on his debut album (even though it is still an incredible debut album!) and he had to shoose songs that were written for him -- He will really be putting in more creative effort into his 2nd album which will hopefully include some of his own songs or a collaborative writing effort, which is what he means when he says he wants people/the fans to see more of him as an artist --

    1. I can hardly wait to hear his next album - I think I have an idea of the type of songs he wants to sing and I am curious to hear them - There is more depth and soul in Scotty than the average teenager - He is a real artist and that artistry will be seen in his next album - He is also into classic country, so this is really going to be something to hear also -

  10. His new video is the sweetest ever,a stroke of genius.I couldn't imagine what they were going to put together for this song ,and video. It all fits so well it is the best .I just love it.Everyone is you can spare $1.95 you would help his song climb the charts by purchasing it on i-tunes.It's does not matter if you bought the single before, you can but this because it's a video, and it's well worth the money.also then big help would be to go to mediabase request at the top of the page, click in and then request his song to be played on the radio

  11. Patience - we are not going to see/hear a new album until 2013. I hope he releases Old King James to christian radio - they have a separate award show AND I still would like to see You Make That Look Good as a single. Several of his songs should be released in the SUMMER based on lyrics. THey were almost too laste with WTT.,,i,e, football games. Since everything is video now, when a song is released, a video should be done and released at the same time....just my opinion.
