The title track on Scotty McCreery's debut album is called "Clear as Day." It's about teenagers drinking and driving. Over the weekend, I asked McCreery, 18, how he avoided the pressure to go down that wrong path in high school. "I could never get over wanting to have control over my body. Not having control was just never my thing," he told me. "And so I just stayed away from it. If you're away from it, you can't get caught into it. If you have your mind made up before you get into those situations, it's pretty easy to say no."

That's sage advice from a man so young. But I think surrounding himself with like-minded teenagers was also key to his smart decision-making.  "I had friends who were in that lifestyle, I guess. But not my close friends. The friends I hung out with the most and spend most of my time with, we are just not into that stuff. We don't have any interest," he said.

Written by Casey Beathard, Phil O'Donnell and Adam Wheeler, the song is one of my favorites on the album. Because of McCreery's spin on it, yes, but also because the message that one wrong choice ("I walked you to your brother's Silverado/When he climbed behind the wheel he seemed OK") is all it takes to turn a post-game party into a tragedy.

  1. This song is also one of my favorites on the album for the same reason - it speaks a really heavy message and reminder not only to the youth but even to adults - Just that this song is really sad and the ending is pretty heavy stuff -

  2. I believe McCreerians expect Scotty to remain "a man with a message" so it will be no surprise if he always sets aside space on his albums to impart a piece of "wisdom beyond his years" in his music. He has had tremendous family guidance and it appears to be sticking with him. I so admire his conviction and his total understanding that you are less tempted if you surround yourself with people of like mind. No one on earth can say that Scotty isn't wise beyond his years in so many ways.

  3. Scotty has been blessed with parents that "parent" and also with a gifted mind as well as voice. He makes the right decisions due to who he is and is a marvelous role model for the youth of today. Adults can take a note from his way of life also. I made the same conscious decision of always wanting to be in control of "me". I not only do not drink, but do not smoke. You can have a lot more fun being in control of your life. Try it, it works!

    1. I agree! Today you find many people, specially teenagers, who are in the wrong path: drinking, smoking, consuming drugs, having sex with everyone... And society wants you to think that if you aren´t like that, you´re a loser. But they´re wrong, and Scotty is the living proof of that! You can follow Jesus, have Christian values and still be a succesful, fun cool person, just like Scotty is! I find hope in this young man, hope that you can still find good people out there! Keep going Scotty, you make Jesus and many other people really proud!

  5. I AM SO GLAD THAT SCOTTY DIDN'T GO DOWN THE WRONG PATH AND HE PICKED GOOD FRIENDS TO BE AROUND. HE HAS GREAT PARENTS AND A GREAT SISTER THAT SUPPORT HIM AND THEY GIVE GOOD VALUES. THEY ARE GOOD CHRISTIAN PEOPLE. I AM ALSO GLAD THAT SCOTTY DIDN'T GO DOWN THAT PATH BECAUSE WE WOULD HAVE NOT SCOTTY'S GREAT VOICE AND SCOTTY IS SUCH A SWEETIE. SCOTTY IS ALSO A GOOD ROLE MODEL FOR THESE TEENAGERS. GOD BLESS SCOTTY AND ALL OF HIS FANS LOVE HIM.

  7. Scotty is amazing, so wise. There aren't many teens that think this way. It takes more of a man to stand up for what you believe, definitely good parenting. Adults too could learn from him. Most young people get into trouble because of their association. Surround yourselves with people who have the same values you have. Good job Scotty!!!
