When McGraw walked onto the stage at 6:30, following opening sets by
Jake Owen and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, the crowd let out a
roar – yet seemed to be holding back. But 90 minutes and countless $10
cans of beer later, fans were ready to go. When North Carolina native
and “American Idol” champ Scotty McCreery appeared from nowhere to help
out McGraw with his 1995 hit “I Like It, I Love It,” it got so loud in
there you’d have thought the Panthers had just clinched a Super Bowl
berth.
How often do 50,000 people come together at the same time in the same
place in Charlotte to enjoy the same music? If history repeats itself,
the answer is once every 15 years.
