Interview, Sports American Idol Winner Scotty McCreery Sets Career High For Single-Game Strikeouts

Obviously inspired by my interview with him coming out in that week's issue of ESPN The Magazine, American Idol winner Scotty McCreery Friday night struck out a career-high eight batters in his Senior Night start for Garner Magnet High School against Southeast Raleigh. I already rambled about Scotty in a previous blog post, and I swear, I'm not just going on about the kid because he's famous. I really love the fact that he's made time to play baseball this year. He's never going to get to do it again. I mean, yeah, he'll probably get to throw around some if he wants, but he'll never play on an organized team after this season's over. He recognized that, and forced it into his schedule. That's love of the game, man. Some weekends he's touring with the biggest names in country music—heck, he's becoming one of the biggest names in country music—but for a few months, he's also just been a kid on a ballclub, out there raking dirt, tamping the mound, wearing the exact same uniform as a dozen other guys, just being a kid. There's something just impossibly romantic about that to me. This country music star, clinging to his youth in the form of a kid's game. I know, sorry, I'm getting way too saccharine right now. Sue me. I just thought it was awesome, and sometimes that makes me ramble. Let's flip this. Turn it on you. What would you do if you could McCreery yourself? What I mean is, what's something from your youth you'd do more of if you could? If you can't, why not? And if you can—why ain'tcha? Go.

  1. Nice write-up. And I couldn't agree more - my mom always tells her kids & grandkids the same: enjoy your youth/high school years, because you cannot take them back - we were all active in high school varsity sports; in college it became more of a weekend pastime -

    1. Also, I know that we all want to see and hear more of Scotty singing AND we want radio to play his songs more, etc. -- But right now it seems that Scotty McCreery is a BASEBALL STAR! I think this is sooooo cool! :) Pictures of Scotty performing; pictures of Scotty in his baseball uniform pitching! Awesome!

  2. Love the part where he says Scotty is becoming one of the biggest names in country music. We all need to keep supporting him...a voice and personality like his doesn't come along very often.

    2. I so agree Granmma Nancy. Love this write up. Can't wait to hear new things from Scotty, I'm wearing out the cd. I listen to his music everyday. ESPN is talking about him because he's a good baseball player too. Love how he's getting noticed.

  4. Love this article. So great to see others who are impressed by our young man just like we all are. Yes, Grandma Nancy, an artist like Scotty is very rare and so special. I can't imagine there are very many (if any) teenagers who would actually "make time" for high school sports if they had the hugh career that Scotty has at this point. He just amazes me with his maturity and ability to make good decisions, not to mention his tremendous work ethic. I think this is one of the main reasons he has amassed such an enormous, avid fan base...he is just so dang loveable!!!! (Of course, that beautiful voice doesn't hurt either)

Found this video on YouTube where Scotty got hit by the baseball the other night:

  6. This is a very touching article, from a reporter, who is as impressed with Scotty, as all we fans are. It appears everything Scotty does, he puts his whole heart into...a wonderful example for other young people, that they too, can achieve their goals if they will work at it, like Scotty has. Scotty, has another plus...he's put his faith in the One who said, "if you believe, all things are possible". Amazing young man!!

  17. He is the greatest!!! I wsh I could hear more of his music down here in San Antonio. Radio stations here have WTT on their playlist, but I've never heard it once. I'm wearing his album out and have downloaded his two singles. Love Scotty! I watch AI every week and have to say that Scotty's voice blows them all away. If you close your eyes and really listen to the songs you can almost tell who will sell records. You can close your eyes for any of Scotty's songs and hear beautiful sounds.

    1. Maybe you might try calling the station and request the song? Some stations play WTT but at really odd hours, like after midnight or early morning -- usually it's the djs who "control" which songs on the playlist they will play and when -- you have to "woo" the djs also -- i know, but sometimes that's how it is -- some djs are actually very nice --
