Scotty McCreery puts a new spin on country music

Handsome 17-year old "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery changed the way I think about country music. - Scotty McCreery official website

Aside Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, or Dolly Parton, I’ve never really liked country music. I have always thought of country music as something farmers or Southerners listen to when they remember the feelings of home and family. So when I looked at the handsome face of 17-year old “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery, I figured he was a typical Taylor Swift singing about love, relationships, or southern life growing up. Boy was I wrong!

A native of Garner, North Carolina, McCreery began singing at a very young age in church choir. By age ten, he had learned how to play the guitar and sing like “The King.” In the late 2000s, McCreery won “Clayton Idol,” a smaller scale “American Idol” in North Carolina. He then successfully auditioned for Season 10 of “American Idol” in Milwaukee and won the competition after eighteen rounds of singing.

McCreery released his first album entitled “Clear As Day” in October 2011 and just last week won the Academy of Country Music Awards New Artist of the Year award. Ironically, he’ll be attending North Carolina State University this fall to major in marketing or communications, instead of something music- related.

After listening to his hit single featured on the album, “The Trouble with Girls,” I was pleasantly surprised. While some of his songs have to do with typical country love, his deep, bass voice resonates so beautifully. This particular song really reflects his character. It impresses me how humble he’s been since winning American Idol. I’m equally amazed at how he wants to remain a normal high school senior, despite his national celebrity status.

Of the twelve tracks featured on the CD, “Water Tower Town” and “I Love You This Big” are two other notable songs. “Water Tower Town” is a fun, upbeat and pure country success that will have you bouncing and singing along. On the opposite end of the spectrum, “I Love You This Big” sounds like an intimate moment meant for prom or the first dance at a wedding. Listening to those three songs, I feel like McCreery is pouring out his soul into his music. As a huge fan of many different types of music, I am definitely going to be more open to country music. McCreery has made me look at country music in a new light, and I am excited to see what he releases next.

  3. Look at this -

OMG This is GREAT news! It could really benefit Scotty!!!

The fight to preserve classic country and present it to a new generation of fans may just have become a lot easier. After 12 years off the air, the original TNN, “The Nashville Network” has just announced it is coming back this summer, and is committed to “true country music.”

TNN ran for 17 years from 1983 to 2000 until Viacom, which owns CMT, MTV, CBS, and many other networks, morphed the country music, outdoor lifestyle, and family entertainment channel into Spike, leaving many traditional and classic country fans underserved. The new TNN will be a sister network to My Family TV, TUFF TV, PBJ, MyCarTV and Frost Great Outdoors, and Luken Communications’ Retro Television (RTV).

This time, instead of a cable network, TNN will be a digital broadcast station, meaning it would be picked up by affiliates. The programming will be a mix of digitally-restored classic content from the TNN archive, with contemporary shows mixed in. Shows already scheduled to be a part of the TNN lineup include: Memories of the Grand Ole Opry, Crook & Chase, Celebrity Kitchen, The Country Vibe, Music City Tonight and Larry’s Country Diner.

The announcement was made at the 2012 NAB show in Las Vegas. Television and radio personalities Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase teamed with Luken Communications and Jim Owens Entertainment to acquire the rights to the TNN brand.

TNN is coming back! Thank God! That network is what made me fall in love with Country as a child in the 80s/90s!

  7. Just to add another fan to the Scotty Train!!! Nice article. Just watched AI and a comment JLo said to Jessica is she's got the vocals, but she needs to connect with the song and the audience. Scotty connected with the audience every week. I think my favorite is Philip and I think it is sweet, shy, humble attitude like Scotty and I like his voice. But no one yet has touched me like Scotty.

  8. Scotty has touched so many hearts with his southern, sweet politeness and charm. He knew who he was and what he wanted to do...........and he is doing it ! I think Phillip is a copycat and don't feel he can sing. He looks so strained on stage. I predict Joshua, Jessica and Skylar will be the top 3. How's that for sticking my neck out and my foot in my mouth? lol. Scotty has spoiled me for any other singer. Gotta have my Scotty fix daily! He still makes me smile!

  14. I think it might make me a bad person, but I was disappointed last week that they saved Jessica, because it meant that I wouldn't hear Scotty sing Please Remember Me! Went to YouTube and listened to it. Wish it was on his CD...I'm about 1000 years old and don't know how to download and organize things on the MP3 player I bought 2 years ago!

    4. Yikes!! Heejun is the last person Scotty reminds me of. Scotty doesn't remind me of anyone on idol but for me, he does have that polite, humble disposition of Elvis and also a voice similar to Elvis. Just had to comment on that!! Lol

    1. YES-----let's win this one----just to show Billy Dukes!!!! Go to tasteofcountry.com, and find the poll for "Best Turn-It-Up Song"------Scotty is 3rd behind Carrie and Kenny!

  16. He is 2nd now, just below Carrie. Leave a comment there too. Not very many Scotty comments. But don't be rude to any of the others.....please....I hate that. AI is not country enough for me this year. Love Skylar though. I wish she would sing a Reba song. Jennifer is doing a good job as judge this year, but I don't think she should tell people how to vote. It would be interesting to know who Scotty likes the best. Holly is sure a cute little gal. Maybe she will pick Scotty to do a duet with on the final.......that would be sweet.

  17. Scotty is going to be bigger than big and I couldn't be happier. I never tire of his beautiful voice. Elvis Presley was the last one that I loved as much and then Conway, George Jones & Alan Jackson. I don't fall in love easy, been married to the same great guy for 47 yrs. I am proud to be a supporter of Scotty & can't wait for the Fan Club Party 6/9 in Nashville.
