Scotty McCreery Not Planning to Major in Music

By Brittany Joy Cooper
While Scotty McCreery may have shot into stardom practically overnight on ‘American Idol,’ the 18-year-old Garner, N.C. native isn’t gaining fame at the cost of an average teenage life. In fact, the ‘Water Tower Town’ singer continues to impress with his level-headed decisions. After revealing a couple weeks ago that he’ll be attending North Carolina State University in the fall, McCreery announced his intended major this week.
“For me right now I’m looking at marketing,” the young star told Country Vibe. “Marketing or communications, something that could help me out with what I’m doing, something could help me with this industry but not necessarily be music because I’m learning about music every day and I’m in music class all the time as an 18-year-old.”
Impressive logic, right? We’re not entirely surprised, though, since McCreery was quick to rejoin his high school baseball team this year and pitch a few games, even though he had just been on tour with Brad Paisley and the Band Perry. Just last week, he told CMT that he plans to room with four of his longtime friends while away at school so as not to get stuck with random roommates. The ACM New Artist of the Year says it’s about balance.
“I’m not ever gonna be that guy that’s out there working 365 days a year,” he explains. “I care about my family and my home life and this all happened to me so quick I think it’s important for me to get in slowly and work my way in. And so right now we have that balance. It’s working good in high school, and college will be a whole other monster.”

  5. We could all help our boy succeed by all buying WTT as a single on itunes. And, requesting WTT on the whole mediabase. The mediabases are monitored to see how many requests for a particular song is made. This is how the station decides what song to put on their play list. When requesting, check WTT, or if it isn't listed then write it in. Then put on first name, security code and hit enter. You can vote the whole mediabase.

  6. CHECK OUT MTV.COM....A PORTION OF THE ARTICLE, IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY READ IT...."Considering that he's already heard some original compositions that were "far beyond" Scotty's 17 years, Booth predicted that if his buddy wins (actually, when he wins), McCreery will make a true roots country record that would stick to the style he's fostered on "Idol." (BOOTH IS A SCHOOL MATE OF SCOTTY'S)

  10. All this high school & college back home stuff with Scotty has me reminiscing my own youth. I can relate to his background. I think that if you have a happy, well balanced and well grounded childhood, it serves you well in adult life. I had such a wonderful childhood and teenage life growing up in the country, really great fun memories. Not all of my friends can say the same.
