Azalea Festival headliner Scotty McCreery still the 'same guy'

Who: Scotty McCreery in concert

When: 8 p.m. Friday, April 13

Where: Trask Coliseum, UNCW campus

Tickets: There'll be a guy outside the arena wearing an overcoat and a beret. When you see him, don't look him in the eye. Say the word "flashlight" and hand him an envelope full of money. He'll give you two tickets. (Editor's note: The show is sold out.)

When Scotty McCreery returned to Garner Magnet High School after winning "American Idol," his friends weren't sure if their classmate had changed.

After all, millions of people had tuned in each week to hear McCreery – who's playing a sold-out concert for the Azalea Festival at Trask Coliseum on Friday – sing in his deep, country way. He was whisked across the country for interviews. He was on tour with country superstar Brad Paisley. He was this jeans-and-boots stereotype of a country music star that they didn't recognize. "Within the first week," McCreery said during a phone interview, his friends realized that he was still Scotty. "They wanted to see if I'd changed. When they saw me in a T-shirt and shorts, they knew I was the same kid."

Sure, he's the same kid. But he has enough money to eat steak every night and take a limousine to school. Instead, he still eats off the dollar menu, he said, and he has bonded with Loretta, his pet name for the Ford F-150 that was presented to him by "American Idol." "I'm trying to save as much as I can," McCreery said. "I'm trying to be smart about it." His first major purchase, he said, was a new computer, which he bought "right off the bat." Since then, he's also bought himself a pair of shoes.

In many ways, McCreery is just like many of his classmates. Like them, he's focused on the prom (April 21) and graduation (June 7). And, like some of them, he does have one important decision behind him – he chose N.C. State University over East Carolina, Belmont and Middle Tennessee State.

  1. We are only young once in this lifetime. It's important to enjoy one's youth and especially high school events with your friends -- because after that every one goes off on their own life paths. You cannot take back those "carefree" days/years. Sure, nowadays there are online classes/courses, but it is not the same. It does work for others depending on their circumstances in life.

Some kids these days do not think high school prom or other senior year events are important. But when they get older they will wish they had gone to that prom or recollection/retreat or whatever. I am lucky to have stayed in touch with my high school and college friends all these years and we all get together as often as we can and talk about our present and laugh about those good old carefree days. So I'm glad to see that Scotty is trying to have this balance in his life and with the guidance of his family and support of his true friends, the people of NC, and his fans.

  2. Usually a person becoming sucessfull ,doesn't change there personality. You are who you are as a person as a human being. What has changed is his career, this makes his life different than it was before. His friends are not there yet, they will only be starting on there journey in life to pursue there careers.Once he won idol, and his career took off he's already on the road to follow his dream of singing. If he loves his music he should stay out there as much as he can while he's on top of things .When I see him perform to me that is where his heart .i hope he doesn't take a step backwards to be with his buddies .College is a good thing ,and it is easy enough to balance your schedule there,it depends on how many credits you take a semester, your not in class all day like you are in high school. My kids all worked going to college they had no problem balancing there schedulesOne thing for sure they all learn how to party,
They love that independence from the parents.

    1. I agree with what you've just said here. I'm sure they are taking all factors into consideration. But I still think that it really is about him completing all the basic credits. I know the articles say that he will be on campus during the week and performing on weekends, but in the interviews right after the ACM Awards show, I thought Scotty said that they would try to figure out his academic schedule and work it "around" the music. He is going to be out on the road a lot more for sure and will have to go to Nashville to work on more songs/recordings. All that traveling/flying! Which is why I am inclined to think that it's more about adapting to that college regimen (like you said it's not like high school) and preparing himself to make the move to Nashville eventually. Everything's been happening fast this past year and I think he just feels that he needs this time to get/maintain that balance.

I, too, was thinking that when Scotty is with the music/performing, it's his soul. I think it was all his young life like this and being on AI really brought that out, I think surprising even his friends back home. He truly is an artist, not just a singer. And I really, really hope to hear even more great music/songs from him. Wish him all the best.

  3. With the prom coming up, one thing we want to keep in mind is not to create drama over who he takes and not start thinking this is his soul mate. It's a dance...let him enjoy it, if he chooses to go. I know we all are curious about who he will take, but just don't blow it out of proprtion. Can't wait for some neqw music...just love him and his voice so much.

    1. I know where this is coming from, but that's there already. With all due respect, teenagers are teenagers, and he does have tons of teenage girl fans. As an adult I really don't care who he takes or if he does go or take anyone. I won't say more.

  4. I think you'll see Scotty working just as much as you see him now. He has lots of energy and is very bright. His attitude toward life, music, and school is very grounded - you just make it work. In college, I worked 3 different
part-time jobs, took a full course load, was in a sorority and then my boyfriend, a grad student, and I decided to marry before my sophomore year(I graduated on time cume laude). It was not normal at all, but it worked for me.
I know how Scotty lives a double life because I had to wear many different hats all at 18 years old, too. Now years later, I have kept in touch with many friends from my youth and college days. I have so many fond memories. With all that on my plate, I traveled, went to football games, had a great time in my sorority, went on girlfriend trips, played team softball and tennis, etc. My husband did the same with full support from me. My husband and I have done so many wonderful things together, too. We were married many years before our childen were born and now that they are old enough love to hear our stories. Scotty is a beautiful person and he will know what is right for him. I just hope, for purely selfish reasons, he will be able to comfortably make as much time for his music and the fans as he currently does. He said in the post acceptance award area that he would work his college classes around his music schedule. He definitely puts a lot of thought into what he says and does so I don't have any doubt that we will all be very pleased. Also, I think he missed performing and the Vegas show only solidified that plan for him.

    1. Great Post! Yes, Scotty definitely HAS to perform! He said it is his passion, And I believe it's his LIFE BLOOD! So he will certainly not let college life become more important! He just wants to experience some of it. And fulfill his plan to go to college! And we, his fans, will most certainly not let him be gone too long!! We could not survive without our Scotty!!

  6. Scotty sold out the Trask Coliseum, which is a 5500 seat auditorium, at the Azelea Festival on 4/13/12!! As of tonight, Kenny Loggins still has seats available for his 4/12/12 show. Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, and others have played there, too. Way to go Scotty!! I know it is in NC, but this is a big deal! It is all over the media that his show is SOLD OUT!! This looks good to the venue owners and puts success with an !! next to his name.

Fortunately, I am going to his show in NJ in July at a theater that has about 1400-1600 seats. I bought tickets in the morning of the 2nd day and there were only about 100 seats left in the back rows of the balcony. I haven't checked lately, but I don't think any tickets would be available. I felt so fortunate to see him in a smaller venue because I don't know if that will ever happen again.

My mom, who lives in SC, said they are heavily advertising Scotty headlining the Coke concert after the Braves Game on 5/26/12. She said she sees the tv ad many times during the Braves Game and other times during the day on different stations(prime time). She said it is a great ad with Braves, Coke, and Scotty mentioned. I live in CT and they are advertising him on the country station for the Brad Paisley concert on Aug 10th at Bethel Woods. They play the ad frequently on the station so his name will be around for months. His name is also mentioned for the Fan Fest in Nashville in June!!! I am very excited to hear his name out there in different parts of the country at different events. I don't hear a lot of artists being mentioned, but Scotty's name is being mentioned with the Big Ones in country music. That's our Scotty!!!

  8. The Water Tower Town tweets are wonderful!! Someone posted my hometown water tower in Greenville, SC!! FANTASTIC! They are all requesting DJ's to play WTT. I just sent a tweet to Cody Alan to ask Cumulus (who he works for) if he could help us to get Scotty added to Cumulus Radio stations. They own an impressive amount of stations across the country in all genres of music. I also sent a direct request to them with my email to add Scotty to their list of artists. Hopefully, they will get back to me to say they will or why they are unable to add him.

  10. I am thrilled that Scotty is going to college. Those will be memories to add to his bank. He will still have concerts to keep his name out there. We will not forget him. I am sure he is taking Gabi to the prom. They have been hanging out quite a bit....Myrtle Beach, around town, etc. I also, kind of wondered about him performing for his high school prom.........Guess our job is just to vote everything Scotty, buy cds and support him in whatever he wants to do. He is lengendary!

    1. So, contrary to what he's been saying all along, he is dating someone and does have a gf?

      Delete
    2. Look, we don´t know for sure whether he has or has not a girlfriend. And if he has, it is NOT contrary what he has been saying all along.

Earlier on he used to answer that he is "single", but since TTWG video, he never said that he is "single" or "not dating" or that he "didn´t have a girlfriend". He simply said he was a busy guy and it´s difficult etc.
