Scotty McCreery is a little bit pitchy - ESPN

In one year, Scotty McCreery went from country-music-listening high school ballplayer to reigning "America Idol" touring with Brad Paisley. But the 18-year-old still feels at home on the mound, so after missing the 2011 season, he returned to Garnet Magnet High School in North Carolina for earn back a pitching spot for his senior year. And he’s off to a stolid start, with 1.56 ERA and 13 strikeouts in nine innings through April 17. The country crooner slash curveball ace gave Playbook a glimpse of his new life. What’s a typical day these days? If I’m touring with Brad, I’ll be home Sunday, go to school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, then I hit the road Thursday through the weekend. But if I’m home like I am now, I just go to school and live like a normal kid. Except maybe I do an interview like this. How hard do you throw? I’m not the guy going out there throwing 90. I top out around 80, so I have to work that off-speed. We hear the curveball is your pitch. Yeah, I’m a finesse pitcher. I try to set up on a nice slow slurve and then hit them with the hard curve. It looks like a fastball and drops out at the last minute. What other pitches do you use? I throw a two-seamer and a slider that’s more like a slurve, a slow slider with a little curve. And I have my hard-break curveball. My curveball’s hard and my slider’s soft. How much time do spend on your game now, versus before "AI?" I can’t put as much time into baseball, but I don’t want to do something halfheartedly. The other guys are there every single day, so I’m still trying to put in as much work as I can. My dad and I bring our gloves on the road and make time to throw. Even if it’s not baseball, we’ll throw a football, just to stay active. Does playing feel different this year? I grew up on the mound, so that’s the same, but there were never this many people. We used to have maybe a dozen show up. Now we’ll get 100, 150, and people from Maine, Ohio, New York. It’s crazy — but great. The crowd gets into it. How have your teammates handled that? They’ve had changes to deal with too — a different atmosphere, the crowds, the craziness. But they’re cool. They have fun with it. What about guys playing against you? They talk smack. "Oh, 'American Idol' kid’s throwing." "Oh, stick to singing." Stuff like that. But it’s all good — I go out there and get them out, and I get the last laugh. And that’s what pitching’s all about. Do you feel like baseball gives you an escape or a way to hang on to being a kid? For sure. Baseball is my last thing from childhood. I’m a senior this year, so it’s my last year to do this. I’m just trying to go out there and enjoy it and make all the memories I can.

Scotty McCreery receives third country music nomination

GARNER -- It’s becoming a bit old hat for Scotty McCreery — another country music association announces award nominees, and the Garner High School student is a contender.
On Monday, CMT announced that Scotty’s music video for “The Trouble With Girls” has been nominated for “Breakthrough Video of the Year” at this year’s CMT Music Awards, to air on June 6 on the country music cable channel.
Fans can go online to vote for Scotty at through June 4. Carrie Underwood – like Scotty, a former “American Idol” winner – leads the nominations with five.
Scotty’s fellow nominees in the breakthrough category have all competed against him before – Lauren Alaina, who has runner-up when Scotty won the 10th season of “Idol” a year ago; Brantley Gilbert and Hunter Hayes, both of whom were nominated against Scotty for Best New Artist at the Academy of Country Music Awards earlier this month; and Pistol Annies and Thompson Square, both of whom were nominated against Scotty for Top New Artist in December’s American Country Awards.
Scotty, an 18-year-old who will soon be graduating from Garner High, is 2-0 in previous nominations — winning at both the Academy of Country Music Awards and the American Country Awards.
“The Trouble With Girls” is a special video for Scotty and his classmates — it was shot at Garner High last fall, using students as extras. The teenage girl seen flirting with Scotty in a chemistry lab, Gabi Dugal, accompanied him to Garner High’s prom on Saturday night.
After graduation, Scotty is scheduled to go back on tour with country singer Brad Paisley. And in the fall, he plans to enroll as a freshman at N.C. State University.

Scott Porter From Hart Of Dixie Talks Singing Careers & Scotty McCreery On Tonight’s Episode

Scott Porter, who plays George Tucker on Hart Of Dixie, gave us a call this morning to talk about this week’s big episode that will bring a familiar Carolina face to the screen: Scotty McCreery. The Blue Bell, Alabama set show features Scott Porter alongside Rachel Bilson and Jaime King as a small town lawyer who meets a New York City doctor. Scott’s character George Tucker was the eye of a bombshell last week and those who watch Hart Of Dixie know exactly the drama that unfolded. If you’re not an avid watcher (what are you waiting for?!) an affair came to light featuring George Tucker’s fiance and the town mayor. But how does Scotty McCreery fit in? This week’s episode, George takes some time to sort his feelings and runs away to New Orleans in hopes to achieve everything off of a bucket list. As he enters a Big Easy jazz club, who else is singing on stage than Carolina’s own Scotty! A bigger surprise for Hart of Dixie fans is that Porter shows off his own musical style and sings on the show! “It’s nice to exercise those muscles again and be able to show new fans of Hart of Dixie I have a little versatility,” Porter admits. He sings a version of Jambalaya made famous by Hank Williams in tonight’s episode. Is it nerve-wracking to show off in front of an American Idol winner? “I’m trying to show him up,” Porter jokes with Tanner. “I could’ve been on American Idol.” With over eight years of singing and beatboxing experience, there’s no doubt Porter has dabbled in both music and acting. Catch Hart of Dixie tonight on the CW at 9pm!
