Scotty McCreery is an ACM nominee for New Artist of the Year, but for him, he’s looking forward to catching the show on Sunday night in Las Vegas from the audience as a fan. McCreery says, “Oh man, I remember just watching the show and wanting to be there. No even just be an artist on the show, I always just wanted to sit there and gaze at the artists and see the people walk on stage. And that’s still me, when I was at the… when I was at another award show I noticed that the artists were backstage and everybody was talking and stuff and I was the guy ran to the dressing room and got dressed and ran back to my seat so I didn’t miss the next performance and that’s still me. I’m still the fan, I’m still wanting to be there and so you better believe when I’m there at the ACMs I’ll be watching everybody’s performance probably catch me on camera with my jaw on the floor.”

Scotty McCreery makes Taste of Country's Top Tweets of March 2012

March is a good launching pad into new music and summer concert season. Artists were tweeting regularly from the studio all month long. Some even shared a few tracks early. However, the top tweets from March lean toward the random. It’s Dierks Bentley‘s interesting find in Australia and Rascal Flatts‘ Kodak moment in Phoenix that lead our picks.

Scotty McCreery, Blake Shelton and Hank Williams Jr. all have tweets to add to the list as well. Scroll through by clicking the big orange button below. At the end, let us know which artist you love to follow on Twitter. Heck, even Carrie Underwood and Trace Adkins have jumped on board the social networking tool, tweeting fun tidbits from their own official accounts. Next up — Kenny Chesney?

With just hours left to vote, Scotty McCreery fans have worked overtime to secure the 18-year-old singer his first ACM Award. McCreery is one of three nominees in the New Artist of the Year category, and he’s put together a video using fan clips to help his campaign.

The video — titled ‘Get on the Ball and Vote Scotty McCreery’ — has been on YouTube since last week. In the clip, dozens of fans pass balls of various shapes and sizes out of the camera’s view. The next clip shows a new fan catching a different ball before he or she tosses it.

Each football, baseball, beach ball or other has the singer’s message pasted to it. Fans can vote once per day at

Hunter Hayes and Brantley Gilbert are the other nominees. Both have released their own ‘Vote For’ videos. The ‘Storm Warning’ singer employed a team of kittens to get vote, while Gilbert relied on his fans.

Scotty McCreery had a foundation built with quick-mix concrete

Country guys making good
Young male country music stars are as rare as pink pickups these days. While young female stars have been rising with some regularity in country music, young men find the going tough and the fans locked up by established stars who’ve been popular for a decade or longer. There are so few they’re often nominated twice for new artist awards out of necessity. Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards, however, offers a glimpse into the future of country’s newest male stars.

The fan-voted top new artist category features three acts this year — platinum-selling teen “Idol” Scotty McCreery, former child prodigy Hunter Hayes and the rockin’ hitmaker Brantley Gilbert. They share youth in common, but little else. Each occupies a different niche in the scene, making music that satisfies different parts of the country audience.

“It’s really cool because there is a nice little diversity,” Hayes said. “There’s a totally different thing between what Scotty and I do and a totally different thing between what Brantley and I do, which is fun. We do cover totally different ends of the genre but that shows you how far it spreads, and I love that. I love to see that.”

McCreery had a foundation built with quick-mix concrete when he won “American Idol” last year, and those fans stayed with him when he released “Clear As Day,” which went platinum in three months. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 and Top Country A charts, making him the youngest man to open at the top of the all-genre chart with a debut. It stayed at No. 1 on the country chart for six weeks.

He hopes that’s just the start, though. As he makes the transition from high school senior to budding country star, he’s trying to sort out how to shape his future.“The cool thing for me about that is there’s no formula,” McCreery said. “The record label can tell me this and of course I’m listening to them, they have the experience. But there’s no calculus formula to say, ‘Scotty, if you do this, this and this, you’ll be around in 20 years headlining your own show.’ It’s fun to be working through that.”

Scotty McCreery's Jaw May Drop to the Floor at ACM Awards

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that's happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

If you see American Idol winner Scotty McCreery in the audience at Sunday (April 1) night's ACM Awards, do not be surprised if he looks, well, surprised. It's because he can barely believe this new life of his is really happening and that he's rubbing elbows with the country stars he loves the most. "I remember just watching the show and wanting to be there," he said in an interview with the Academy of Country Music. "I always wanted to just sit there and gaze at the artists and see the people walk onstage. That's still me. I'm still the fan. You better believe when I'm there at the ACMs, I'll be watching everybody's performance, and you'll probably catch me with my jaw on the floor." And be he ever so humble, McCreery added that this kind of stardom is possible for anyone who truly wants it. "You think this 16-year-old kid who bagged groceries for a living -- making a couple of dollars an hour -- you think I thought this could happen? Just go out there and sing, and crazy things can happen," he advises.

Scotty McCreery will be a presenter at the 47th Annual ACM Awards

Scotty McCreery Is Forever Our American Idol was trending worldwide on twitter tonight

McCreerians once again took to twitter to let everyone know just how much they love Season 10's American Idol.

Scotty McCreery Is Forever Our American Idol was tredning worldwide on twitter tonight

Scotty McCreery Performs ‘Water Tower Town’ on ‘American Idol’

By: Amy Sciarretto
‘American Idol‘ Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery returned to the stage tonight (March 29) to perform his twangy, uptempo single ‘Water Tower Town.’ It feels like only yesterday that the singer was competing in the thick of the competition each and every week. Now, with a hit record and hard-earned status as a country superstar, McCreery really has grown by leaps and bounds in the space of a year.

Looking much like he did in 2011, in dark jeans and a black button-down shirt, McCreery cruised through the song effortlessly. He engaged the crowd and the judge’s panel, performing behind the trio for a minute or so. He’s such a natural performer and it showed tonight. America did not make any sort of mistake when it crowned him the winner 10 months ago.

After McCreery’s performance, host Ryan Seacrest ad-libbed Josh Turner‘s ‘Your Man’ when he gave McCreery a hug, nodding to the singer’s audition song and the lyric (“Baby lock the doors / And turn the lights down low”) that started it all.

Show mentor Jimmy Iovine came on the stage to present McCreery with a platinum plaque for his album ‘Clear as Day,’ which means it has sold a million copies. Iovine, a longtime industry exec, acknowledged that for an artist to have a platinum certification on their debut release in this day and age is nothing short of herculean.

Things really have come full circle for McCreery, who is one of the most successful Idols in the show’s history. Congrats on your success, Scotty!

Scotty McCreery to showcase Garner as 'Water Tower Town'

Ken Hall |
The photo Ken Hall took of Garner's Main Street and water tower at sunset will be used as the backdrop for Scotty McCreery if he sings part of his new single, "Water Tower Town" at the Academy of Country Music Awards ceremony on April 1.

McCreery to showcase Garner as ‘Water Tower Town’

Last spring, Scotty McCreery branded himself as Garner’s golden boy on the 10th season of “American Idol.” He continues to keep his hometown in the limelight.

It is anticipated that McCreery will sing part of his new single, “Water Tower Town,” at the Academy of Country Music Awards on April 1 on CBS at 8 p.m. As the backdrop, he will use a photo of Main Street with the water tower showing off Garner’s “A Great Place to Be” logo that was taken by local photographer Ken Hall.

Hall has known the McCreery family for several years and has taken nearly 200 images of the teen country crooner. McCreery’s record label, Interscope Records, even approached Hall to take photos when his debut album, “Clear as Day,” was released.

Dick Clark Productions contacted Hall nearly three weeks ago and set him on the task of getting an image of Garner’s water tower. The image he produced is actually 11 photos stitched together and he spent nearly three and a half hours taking photos to get the best shots.

“For me, it was a chance to help out a friend and a hometown boy,” Hall said. But the opportunity to give Garner positive attention was an added bonus. “It’s just been a banner year for Garner,” Hall said. “It’s just another jewel in the crown, I guess.” And Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams is equally as pleased about the recognition. “It is cool,” he said. “And it’s just a continuation of the very positive attention (McCreery) brings to the town.”

McCreery is nominated for New Artist of the Year category in the 47th ACM Awards along with Brantley Gilbert and Hunter Hayes. Each of the nominees will perform for about one minute during the award ceremony on Sunday evening. McCreery will sing the full version of “Water Tower Town” on “American Idol” Thursday night, March 29. To vote for McCreery, go to Voting is open through Sunday.

Scotty McCreery builds momentum for ACM Awards

A year ago, Scotty McCreery’s fame was limited to fans of American Idol. His baritone voice made him a standout contestant, and his love of country music had piqued Music Row’s interest.
McCreery, now 18, won American Idol in May 2011, and he has since stacked up a list of career highlights and sales numbers that well-established artists envy.

His debut album, Clear As Day, sold more than 1 million albums in its first three months, and his first two singles, “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble With Girls,” have each been downloaded for purchase more than 500,000 times.

McCreery won new artist of the year at the American Country Awards in December, joined Brad Paisley’s Virtual Reality Tour in January and now has been nominated for new artist of the year by the Academy of Country Music along with Brantley Gilbert and Hunter Hayes. The fan-voted award will be handed out Sunday during the 47th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, which air live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas beginning at 7 p.m. on CBS.

McCreery will perform his new single, “Water Tower Town,” on the ACM Awards, as well as on American Idol at 7 p.m. Thursday on FOX.

“It’s a huge deal,” McCreery says of the nomination, seated on his tour bus with his parents, Mike and Judy McCreery, before a Great American Country television taping in February. “It’s been a crazy year for us. There’s been a lot of work put into it. It’s one of those things where you’re recognized for all the hard work you’ve put up, but you’re just going there to have fun. If you get it, cool. If you don’t, you’re still having a good time.”

But even with his success, McCreery says he’s still the same kid he was before American Idol. The Garner, N.C., native attends the same school he did pre-American Idol — something he was warned would be impossible following his success on the popular fan-voted televised talent contest.

“He said he wanted to go back to school, and a lot of people said he couldn’t go back there,” recalls his father, Mike McCreery.

“I just laughed at them,” Scotty McCreery adds.

McCreery describes his first day back at school after winning Idol as “going to kindergarten again.” He got a buzz haircut the night before and wore a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops the next day in an effort to more easily fit back in with his classmates. His principal instructed him to arrive during second period to avoid the rush of students first thing in the morning, and then made an announcement to the school that McCreery was back on campus and that requests for photos or autographs weren’t allowed.

“He said, ‘Mom, I really want this to work,’ ” Judy McCreery says. “I said, ‘It will be OK, hon.’ I was in the hall and I heard the principal make the announcement, and I thought, ‘That’s what we needed to set the pace.’ ”

McCreery generally attends school Monday-Wednesday and then is on the road touring or working to promote his career Thursday-Sunday. He takes his school work with him when he travels, and then makes up tests and quizzes when he returns. Sometimes that means doing his homework in the airport before he boards a red-eye flight back to North Carolina to make it to school on Monday morning.

“I’m banking on my being young,” he says. “I don’t know if I could be doing those red-eyes a few more years down the road. After being away from friends for so long, and I’m doing incredible stuff, fun things, then when I get back around familiar faces, I think it just energizes me. I have two separate lives.”

On-the-job training
School isn’t the only place he’s getting an education. McCreery says he’s learned countless lessons about how to be a country music entertainer from watching Paisley on stage. After the American Idol finished his opening set each night, he would pull on a ball cap (his mom said he looked like the Unabomber) and sneak out into the audience so he could watch Paisley perform.

“Just having the chance to learn from someone like Brad, it’s mind-blowing what he does as a performer and a songwriter and an artist and guitar player, the way he connects with the crowd every single night,” McCreery says. “I’ve learned how to carry myself on tour. I’ve learned how to not get caught up in a different city every night. I’ve learned how to interact with people and how to be a better performer. Just watching Brad — I’ll never be the guitar player he is — but just watching the artist inside of him, I’ve learned so much just from watching one dude.”

And his education, both on and off the stage, continues.

McCreery’s mother is a teacher, and school is highly valued in the McCreery household. So over the past year while the singer did his psychology homework, studied Paisley’s guitar licks and learned how to work an audience, he also spent time deciding where he wants to go to college. That decision hasn’t been made public, but it’s an experience he’s determined to have.

“2011 was by far the most incredible year of my life, but in 2012 I think we’re going to have a lot more opportunities to get out there and do things,” says McCreery, who is set to continue on the Paisley tour after it resumes in May. “2012 is getting on the road and meeting fans, because for me, it’s about seeing them and thanking them, because they are the reason I’m here.”
