‘Idol' Scotty McCreery on balancing stardom, homework

‘Idol' Scotty McCreery on balancing stardom, homework

In late May 2011, the confetti fell as Scotty McCreery was crowned the youngest male winner in "American Idol" history. In the months since wrapping Season 10, McCreery padded his liste of credentials with a world tour, platinum album, gold record and opening slot on Brad Paisley's Virtual Reality 2012 World Tour.

The tour, which also features a performance by The Band Perry, will stop in Las Cruces on Friday, Feb. 17 for a show at the Pan American Center.

As McCreery continues to make strides in country music - accomplishing feats such as being the first country act to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with his first studio album for his record "Clear as Day" - it's easy to forget that he's also still a kid finishing up his senior year of high school.

Between the madness of studying, performing, and country crooning, McCreery still took a moment to chat.

Q. Brad Paisley is known to be a bit of a prankster. How's the tour going so far?

It's been going great! Brad and The Band Perry are great. And yeah, he's gotten me a couple of times. Probably the worst one is that he Photoshopped a picture of my head onto a big muscle guy's body and put it up on the screen during my last song of the show. I couldn't figure out why everyone was just laughing at me until I turned around and saw what he did. It was funny, though, I just went with it.

Q. Have you had any time to yourself since winning "American Idol"?

Oh man, not really. It's been wild and nonstop. We went all over the country and it's just been so fun. We got to play a lot of big shows on the "American Idol" tour, and when we went to Denver, Tim Tebow came out and we all Tebowed on stage.

Q. What's it been like trying to squeeze studying in?

We're still in school for the second semester right now. I'm doing my work on the road and when I get home I'm caught up with the class. We're reading "Hamlet" right now in English (laughs). It's all worth it, though, because I'm graduating in June and I'll be walking with my class.

Q. Why do you think your album was so successful compared to past Idol winners?

Yeah, the response of the fans has just been incredible. I knew after winning that I wanted to put out an album quickly before anyone forgot about everything. Because of that, I think we were all just willing to work hard and even though the album came out fast, we made sure not to sacrifice any songs or goodness. Songs like "I Love You This Big" and "Watertown" just took on a life of their own and everybody could relate to them. It was a group effort, though, and I think the next time, we'll have even more time to come out with some great music.
