Scotty McCreery The Biggest Star Discovered in Years on AI

By Jill Serjeant
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "American Idol" returns on Wednesday for an 11th season, facing a new wolf at the door as it tries to retain its place as the No. 1 U.S. TV program -- not so much age, but competition.
Rejuvenated by a judging panel makeover and the discovery of its biggest star in years in country singer Scotty McCreery, the Fox talent show last season saw a four percent increase in audience, reversing a trend that had seen viewership slip.
"Idol" caught fire in 2011 as teen country stars Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina emerged as likely finalists. McCreery, 17, the eventual winner, went straight to the top of the Billboard album charts in October in the best debut by an Idol champion since 2008. Last week, McCreery's "Clear As Day" album went platinum after selling more than one million copies.

"Last year, we had nearly twice the numbers to our Idol Chatter website around the final than we have ever had. For us, it was a jaw-dropping number," said Mansfield.

Why Scotty McCreery Was A Successful 'American Idol' Winner

"Most every fan of the show has asked themselves it at some point...why are some 'American Idol' winners successful, yet some simply go on and mostly disappear in the industry?

But most importantly, what made last year so different? There were new judges, two country teens in the finale, and the winner's debut album went platinum in just three months!

'American Idol' executive producer, Ken Warwick, explains Scotty McCreery's success on the show! Reported by AZ Central :

Q: Last season Scotty McCreery won and has been successful. Two years before, it wasn't the same for winner Lee DeWyze. Why is that?

A: Scotty just appealed to a big audience. That country audience down South is huge. Scotty just absolutely fit the keyhole that he was made for. He was young, good-looking, a sportsman, a wholesome kid and he had this lovely, rich bass-baritone voice. We always say to these kids: It's not that you can sing, but have you got something about you that you can communicate commercially? Scotty was really made for the show. He was a slam dunk.

Scotty McCreery really has appealed to every age group, from the "Grandmas for Scotty", to 4 year olds sporting Scotty t-shirts and waving homemade posters at hometown viewing parties and the American Idol Season 10 Live Tour stops!

The 18 year old from Garner, NC will go on to have a long and successful career...season 10 was definitely a year that America got it right!"

  6. I'm going to be honest and say, that for me Scotty McCreery is THE biggest star ever discovered on AI -- no other season was like season 10! I watched the first season when KC won and I also happened to watch that season when CU won -- but season 10 (last year) was THE BEST and Scotty was THE STAR already when he sang Letters From Home -- he deserves this ACM nomination and deserves to win New Artist of the Year! :)

  8. I agree ,Steven Taylar was on Ellen yesterday,he said that last year he felt that there were maybe 6 really good singers in his opinion, but he said there are about 20 this year,he said it's going to be one of the best seasons.I'm sorry Steven, but last year was the best that will ever be,there was a poll asking if Scotty would be missed this season and 59% said yes, that's a great number

  9. Scotty brought something more than just his singing -- his charm, his sweetness, his humility, his GOLDEN VOICE!, his performances -- he was just SO refreshing, so real, and beautiful! He just has IT!

  10. A fan had commented sometime in the past (last year, i think), that there are others all around the world who can do rock, pop, whatever, but not everyone can sing/perform like Scotty--he is definitely a real discovery of talent! And I agree!
