Scotty McCreery Sings for President, Starts Christmas Vacation

Schools out for . . . well . . . Christmas break anyway! Scotty McCreery has signed off on his last final of his first semester at North Carolina State University and now he's headed home to Garner, N.C. And he's looking forward to it.
"That'll be cool to get home," he tells Country Weekly. "I've been touring throughout the year, and to have those days to be home and focus on family and friends, and reflect on the last year, it'll be fun. Mom will be baking. We're heading to Grandma's, too. I'm sure we'll have all kinds of good cooking that day."
Scotty shouldn't have a problem finding his way home either. It sounds like the McCreery house will be visible from quite some distance. "I'm not a Griswold when it comes to putting lights up or anything, but my mom and dad, they enjoy putting up lights," he says with a laugh, referencing the contemporary holiday classic National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. "We may have tamed it down this year, but last Christmas we had 15 to 18 trees around the house. They weren't all big ones. We had our main one and then we had ones in the windows and down the front steps and side steps. It got a little crazy last year."
Tonight (Dec. 21), Scotty makes an appearance on TNT's Christmas in Washington, the annual holiday concert held in the nation's capital. Joining Scotty in singing for President Obama will be Diana Ross, Demi Lovato and Korean pop star Psy.
"That was a highlight of my career so far," Scotty says of performing for the commander in chief at the taping of the special. "To look out there and see the president is a little different than seeing a normal fan out there. It was a little more nerve-racking, but a good time."
And Scotty even got to meet "Gangnam Style" phenom Psy. "He was interesting," Scotty deadpans. " I don’t know if he’s a country fan, though—you can’t dance like that in country music."

Harrahs Event Center at Harrah's Cherokee
Clear As Day is the perfect title for Scotty McCreery's debut country album because this impressive collection of songs clearly and vividly captures who Scotty is as an artist and a young man. America fell in love with Scotty in 2011 when he appeared on American Idol and immediately made a name for himself with his deep and undeniably country voice, strong sense of self, small-town roots, and unwavering integrity and conviction.
In May, he won Season Ten of American Idol when a record-breaking 122.4 million votes were cast for the finale and nearly 39 million people tuned in to see the winner's name announced. He recorded his debut album while starring in the American Idols Live! Tour, which Pollstar ranked as one of the nation's Top 15 tours.
Scotty is pleased that he was able to accomplish the goals he had set for his album. "I wanted to make sure people could hear me through the songs they were listening to," he says. "On American Idol, I always told them, 'What you see is what you get. Scotty on the show is Scotty off the show. I'm the same guy onstage and offstage.' On this album, I wanted them to make sure they really got who I am, how I grew up in Garner, N.C., and what I am all about," he says. "It was also really important to me to keep some of the traditional elements of country music in it, to remember where country came from, and I think we did that. I hope that the people who listen to this record will see that and appreciate it and really see exactly who I am."

Scotty McCreery Balancing College Finals With Being a Country Star

By Cory Stromblad 3 hours ago

Scotty McCreery on Instagram
Scotty McCreery, Instagram
Finals week is a challenging time for your average college student, but Scotty McCreery is far from your average university co-ed. North Carolina State University’s most famous student recently took to his official Twitter account to effectively demonstrate the drastic difference in his double life.
“Vegas a couple days ago, Library today,” McCreery tweeted on Wednesday (Dec. 12), sharing the photo shown here and referring to his recent appearance at the American Country Awards. It seems as though the young singer traded in the prestige of his profile career for the grind of finals as a college freshman.
“I’ve been studying non-stop. But it was a lot tougher than I was anticipating going into it,” McCreery reveals (quote via Country Weekly). “When I was doing this in high school, balancing it all was nothing. But college was definetely a huge step. I’ve had to learn how to study again.”
McCreery’s most recent omission regarding his studies is a far cry from how he perceived his life as a college student just months ago. “So far, it’s not been that difficult. I’m not exactly taking Advanced Chemistry right now. So far, it hasn’t been horrible,” he exclusively told Taste of Country. “I’ve just had to have better time management on the road. Instead of sitting down for an hour playing Xbox, I have to sit down and study or write a paper.” “That just comes with growing up and maturing,” added McCreery. “As long as I can do that, I think this whole college thing is going to be easy. If I just wait until 5AM when something’s due in the morning, then that might kill me, but we’ll see.”
With 2012 winding down, the ‘Idol’ singer has just a few weeks to take his exams and spend quality time with his loved ones for the holidays before switching back into superstar singer mode. The busiest man in country music will begin work on his sophomore album before heading back out on the road full-time in February.

The Holiday Guide: The 12 albums of Christmas

The best and worst the season has to offer

Scotty McCreery
Rating 5 out of 5
The 2011 American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, gives his interpretation of some old Christmas chestnuts and a few you may not have heard before.
Let It Snow has a cheery rambunctiousness to it, while First Noel, O Holy Night, Mary Did You Know? and Christmas In Heaven are all delivered in appropriately reverent tones. Jingle Bells and Santa Claus is Back in Town are done R & B fashion, while Holly Jolly Christmas is a wild hootenanny.
McCreery has a distinctive country twang in his voice and he turns it up to full hickory smoke on some of these numbers. His big win was no fluke. (Robertson)

Scotty McCreery goes to Washington

The American Idol winner has big things in the works and shared some of his goals with SheKnows, as well as what he accomplished in 2013.

By Jaclyn Brandt
Scotty McCreery has had a good couple of years. After winning the tenth season of American Idol in 2011, he was shot into the world of stardom and hasn’t looked back. His first studio album came in at number one just five months after winning Idol, and he soon set off on a tour with Brad Paisley.
McCreery spoke with SheKnows on the red carpet of the American Country Awards about being given two of the greatest honors of his life. The singer performed at Christmas in Washington and had a chance to meet President Obama.
"That was huge," he said. "We got the chance to go out there and meet the pres and sing for the pres. It was a little more nerve-racking than most shows, but the president was cool and he was just there for the music and there for the celebration of Christmas, so it was fun."
He also had a chance to meet singer Diana Ross at the concert.
"Never met her, she’s a legend," he said. "It’s always pretty shocking when you get to meet somebody like that. She was incredible, I got chills listening to her."
McCreery also talked about life on the road with a country legend and how it helped him grow as an artist.
"Getting to go on the road with Brad Paisley and see all the fans out there January through October, that was pretty special for me," he said. "I learned a lot from Brad and The Band Perry, that was probably the highlight of 2012 for me."
McCreery released a Christmas album on Oct. 16 and is looking forward to 2013. He says that (despite what the Mayans say), "If 2013 happens, I’ll be putting out a new album."

Scotty McCreery Brings Holiday Cheer, Performs ‘Let It Snow’ on ‘GMA’

By Amy Sciarretto

Scotty McCreery brought a huge dose of country-style holiday cheer to breakfast TV on Tuesday morning (Dec. 11), performing his rendition of the classic ‘Let It Snow’ on ‘Good Morning America.’

Before the one-time ‘American Idol’ winner delivered a spot-on version of the song, the singer confirmed that he did indeed make his stage debut as the baby Jesus in a church play when he was just a newborn. See, Mom and Pop McCreery knew he was a star even back when he was an infant, and he has been preparing for superstardom his entire life.

McCreery also talked about juggling his class schedule as a college student and joked that if “I can do it, anybody can do it” when it comes to winning a reality show. He said that reality talent show contestants should be unique and be prepared, since it’s the ride of a lifetime.

The singer, dressed in his usual uniform of blue jeans and a leather jacket, then performed his McCreery-ed version of ‘Let It Snow’ amid white poinsettias, fans and his backing band. It was such a twangy version of a classic, that McCreery made it his own for the three minutes he performed.

The sleigh bells and the white set certainly made us feel warm and festive, though it’s a brisk December day in NYC.

American Country Awards Fashion: Guys Talk Pre-Show Primping

By Deborah Evans- Price

Scotty McCreery was pretty low key when preparing for the event. "I bought all this myself and dressed myself tonight," he says, noting he didn't use a stylist's help in getting ready for the show. "I'm kind of casual tonight, nothing too crazy. It's just all me. I haven't really bought clothes in about a year or two. I don't like shopping."

Unlike many guys who planned to hit the casinos after the show, 19-year-old Scotty isn't gambling age. So what does he do in Vegas? "SportsCenter is always on TV," he says with a laugh. "I got to see Garth [Brooks] here earlier this year. That was pretty incredible to see him perform. He's one of my childhood heroes. Other than that, I'll walk the strip and go get McDonalds or something."

Scotty McCreery: 5 things to know about the country crooner

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- In early November, Scotty McCreery ran into basketball great and TV commentator Charles Barkley in an airport terminal.
Not only is McCreery a platinum-selling country crooner and the first "American Idol" winner born in the 1990s, he's also a massive North Carolina State fan – so he talked Wolfpack hoops with Barkley.
"He didn't know a whole lot about my music but the thing he told me about N.C. State basketball this year was interesting," McCreery, 19, says. "He said, 'It's different being the hunted instead of the hunter.' And I thought that was cool, because this is the first time in a while they've been relevant."
In October, McCreery did something artists as varied as Elvis Presley, Phil Spector, Death Row Records, Bob Dylan and Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland have done. He released a Christmas album. And McCreery's "Christmas with Scotty" was  hugely successful, already going gold. The LP include classics such as "Santa Claus Is Back In Town" and "The First Noel."
"These songs are timeless," McCreery says of the appeal of recording a Christmas album. "And it's your chance to put your stamp on songs that have been sung thousands of times, and Christmas is definitely my favorite time of the year."
McCreery calls for this interview from his Raleigh apartment, taking a break from studying for exams. That's right: He's an N.C. State communications major Monday through Wednesday, and tours Thursday through Sunday.
Underneath the tree...his future
When he was 10-years-old, McCreery received an off-brand acoustic guitar as a Christmas gift. "Sweet Home Alabama" was one of the earliest song he recalls learning. "I was definitely playing it a lot slower than the record," he says.
The leader is also a follower
McCreery has over 650,000 followers on Twitter. But what celebs does he follow? "Blake Shelton cracks me up on Twitter. And  I follow Erin Andrews, she's really nice reporter for FOX Sports." A really nice reporter.
Hot Rod
On NBC's "15th Annual Christmas from Rockefeller Center," McCreery found himself appearing alongside a pretty formidable lineup of vocalists, including Rod Stewart, Cee Lo Green and Mariah Carey. He was particularly jazzed about meeting Stewart. "He's one of those timeless acts and has one of those iconic voices."
Sliding up the charts
Growing up in North Carolina, McCreery played on the high school baseball team as a pitcher. His outpitch was his slide. "That was what I lived on," he says.
Best birthday gift ever
Around the time he turned 18 in October 2010, McCreery found out his debut LP, "Clear as Day" would enter the album charts at number one – making him the youngest solo artist ever to do so. "That was a pretty cool 18th birthday present. We had a pretty big celebration out at the amphitheatre where I grew up, and played some songs for the folks there. And then we hit the road again, and got right back to work. It was a pretty big time promotion-wise, but we took time to celebrate."

Christmas Is Coming Around Again for Scotty McCreery

Scotty McCreery is in a holiday state of mind and ready to talk a little Christmas. At 19, he still has a touch of youthful enthusiasm about the pending holiday season. But what’s really putting the bow on this particular year is his new Christmas album,Christmas With Scotty McCreery. The album features Scotty’s unique and refreshing take on seasonal standards such as “Let It Snow,” “Jingle Bells,” “O Holy Night” and others. "I’m really blessed that the label supported me with this," Scotty says. "It’s been about a year since the first album, and I was itching to get some new music out. So, it felt right to have a Christmas record."
