Will Scotty McCreery See Album Go Platinum? | HULIQ

It wasn't so long ago that the 17-year-old North Carolina crooner was winning over the hearts of fans across the country on "American Idol." Now 18 and with a hit album on his hands, the only question left is: Will "Clear As Day" go platinum?
Scotty McCreery had a really good year in 2011. He started it off by making it as a finalist on "American Idol," then spent nearly half the year staying at the top of the competition. He topped it all off by become the Season 10 winner of the popular Fox Television show in late May. Then, after a successful tour with his finalist colleagues, he dropped his first album, Clear As Day. That album, spurred by the Christmas shopping season, has passed 800,000 in sales. But after the expected post-Christmas drop-off, will it make it to the platinum plateau?
According to Brian Mansfield at "Idol Chatter," Nielsen SoundScan reported that McCreery's debut album sold 83,000 copies the sales week that ended on Christmas Day, pushing his total sales to 833,000 copies. It is a fairly remarkable achievement for the teen who was also recently recognized as the Best New Artist by the American Country Awards, where the award recipients are chosen by the voting public.
Clear As Day debuted on Oct. 4. It's twelve-week run has placed it to within striking distance of becoming a million-seller -- a platinum album. That hasn't been achieved by an "American Idol" finalist for the past two seasons (although established "Idol" stars have achieved platinum sales, like Daughtry and Carrie Underwood). The last finalist to score a platinum album was Season 7 winner David Cook's 2008 major label debut, which sold over 1.3 million copies.

  6. "fairly remarkable achievement?" I say it is a very remarkable achievement considering he was just an unknown teenager in junior high school before AI -- and to debut @#1 on the billboard 200 all-genre!? Very impressive debut for a country singer his age!

  9. I just ran across this post on idolforums. I usually get the early number predictions from HDD, but this came from Billboard. Lady A (the only country) is in the top 10, but i don't see Scotty here. :(( I'm sure he'll pop up once the final numbers are in!! :-)

The Billboard charts are getting extra "Sexy" this week.

Electronic/pop/rap duo LMFAO just scored its second No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with "Sexy and I Know It" and now the act is heading for its first top 10 album.

Industry prognosticators project that the pair's "Sorry for Party Rocking" album will zoom into the top 10 on next week's Billboard 200 chart -- a first for the set and group. Sources say "Sorry" might sell anywhere between 50,000 to 70,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Jan. 2.

On this past week's tally, it rose 24-16 with 74,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan -- a gain of 85%. "Sorry" debuted and peaked at No. 12 on the chart dated July 9 while their first album, "Party Rock," topped out at No. 33 in 2009.

"Sorry" is one of a number of albums that are being promoted in the iTunes Store for a $6.99 sale price. Others that are discounted include Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night," Florence + the Machine's "Ceremonials," Adele's "19," Michael Jackson's "Number Ones" and Foster the People's "Torches."

Florence's set is also poised to hit the top 10 -- for the first time since its debut at No. 6 on Nov. 19, 2011.

On SoundScan's Building chart below -- a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (ending Sunday) as reported by six major merchants, Lady Antebellum, LMFAO and Florence + the Machine are situated at Nos. 4, 5 and 7, respectively.

Adele's "21" is found at No. 1 on the Building tally -- and should return to No. 1 for a 14th non-consecutive week on the Billboard 200. Sources suggest the album will move over 150,000 copies by week's end.

Elsewhere on SoundScan's Building chart, Drake's "Take Care" is No. 2, Young Jeezy's "T M: 103 Hustlerz Ambition" is No. 3 and Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" is No. 6. The Black Keys' "El Camino" is No. 8, followed by Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" and Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" at Nos. 9 and 10, respectively.

The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. TV Talent Contests - Idol, XFactor, the Voice break records ... mostly by the judges, but who's counting, as Scotty McCreery proves a major breakthrough.
