AOL Sessions

In just a matter of a few months, Scotty McCreery has made quite a name for himself beyond 'American Idol.' The humble North Carolina native was wrapping up his junior year of high school when he won the popular reality competition show, with a record number of votes cast. Since then, he has seen his debut album, 'Clear As Day,' not only top the all-genre charts but also break chart records. With the album’s debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Scotty is the first country artist to have an all-genre chart topper with their first studio album. At 18, he's also the youngest male singer ever to accomplish that feat. And with one more for the history books, the album’s first radio release, 'I Love You This Big,' was the highest-charting debut single by a new artist since 1984.

So, has this instant, mind-blowing success gone to the former grocery store clerk's head? Absolutely not. What’s just as important to the baritone-voiced musical prodigy is staying true to his roots, his faith, his friends and family. When Scotty visited AOL's New York City studios, we were just as impressed with his humility and Southern charm as we were with his flawless performance of four songs from 'Clear As Day.' Still, the singer insists he’s "not Saint Scott." "I've messed up plenty of times and done some stupid stuff that I shouldn’t have done," he insists, "but that's being a teenager."

A teenager with an incredibly bright future ahead of him.

The Trouble With Girls

"It's a sweet song about all of the great things about girls, and turns around and says the 'trouble with girls is that nobody loves trouble as much as me.' Saying nobody loves girls … cause girls are beautiful things. So glad God put 'em on the earth with us."

I Love You This Big

"There were a lot of factors that played into getting that single, cause it had to be right for the 'Idol' moment, you know the finale moment. But then we thought it had to be good for radio as well, and that was really the one that we thought could have that balance and have the right things that it needed to do that."

Clear As Day

"The county right over next to me has one of the highest death totals for teenagers in car accidents. I’ve known personally some of those kids, and I’ve known friends of those kids, so it’s been a … those are tough times, you know? So, every time I sing that, those memories are flashing back in my head."

Out of Summertime

"Sometimes I get impatient with my family and I have to tell myself to stop, and there have been some times where I’ve messed up and screwed up, I’m not Saint Scott. I’m not some dude that hasn’t ever messed up before, I’ve messed up plenty of times and done some stupid stuff that I shouldn’t have done, but that’s being a boy, that’s being a teenager. You can’t get too upset about that stuff."

  5. God he does ILYTB so good live! These are wonderful. OOST seemed a little tough on him at the end - the range is really high in that song. But, man, he nailed everything else!! Love him, and his voice.

  7. What a lovely surprise. Scotty's vocals are amazing - better than on CAD except for OOST. I think he just needs a bit more practice on that one - it's not only high, it is very fast paced. I am sad that this first tour is not coming to the northeast, but thanks to this site, I'm sure others will share and we will all be able to enjoy the gift of seeing and hearing from Scotty. Thank you, Donna and everyone else that contributes - I check this site at least twice a day and am seldom disappointed.

  8. To 5:23 PM post I read on MJs blog that these were recorded during the time he had that sore throat/cold and if you listen on one of the videos where he was talking, he is hoarse. I thought he did great and I loved the interview session, Scotty amazes me for an 18 year old that he seems to know what he wants in life and that he wants to learn more about the music industry and how to market himself better, wise choice. He is not afraid to say I'm not perfect and have made mistakes, we all make mistakes in life. I hope he will always stay as grounded and humble as he appears to be. Great Job!!!

  9. Love this kid, truly! I just watch these with a smile on my face. Can't get enough Scotty! I don't care about OOST I still liked how he sang it, he just got ahead of himself and didn't pace himself right. Listen or watch, Elvis or Sinatra when they were doing studio type stuff, you know just working the song out on how they wanted to sing it, you'll hear the same type of things happening. I've done that just talking, where I'm thinking about the next thing out of my mouth before I'm finished with the first thing. I hadn't heard him sing it other than on the album before, so I was real excited to hear him sing it, love it. I know this is selfish but I can't wait until his next album and the next, & the next....hahaha got carried away there. I'll say it again, just love me some Scotty!

  14. A very special Christmas card arrived for me today from the McCreery family. I can't thank them enough for this Christmas gift for it is a gift I will treasure and one that I can only return by keeping them in my prayers. From another grandma who sees a better future for America with a youngster called Scotty.

  16. Just watching a little bit of a special with Justin Beiber. I just don't gety it! There is no comparision..Scotty is much more talented and well grounded, moral person. Scotty is so confident and is comfortable in his own skin. He sings beautifilly and doesn't have to jump all over the stage and I can understand everything he says, not like many pop and rock stars. He is so unique and such a breath of fresh air in the music industry!!!

  17. I watched BackStory on GAC tonight....Alan Jackson.....a real County Gentleman....that is what I think Scotty is..a Country Gentleman. Alan doesn't jump all over the stage either. Doesn't need to because his voice is (like Scotty's) wonderful and clear. You can actually hear the words. And no messy hair or scruffy beard. Just clean cut and handsome!! Love this kid, and I am selfishly awaiting another album. I would like to see an album where he does cover songs from the "olden" days. And I would LOVE to see him do a duet with Brad on the tour. "The Old rugged Cross". I saw Brad sing that recently, and they would be great on it together. I agree Scotty is a breath of fresh air in the music industry.

  18. I haven't heard anything else about NYE, I think it's going to be difficult for Scotty to be anywhere except traveling on NYE. I was in my local Walmart yesterday, and they have been out of Scotty's CD for weeks now. Such a shame since this was the biggest selling season. Merry Christmas to everybody!

  19. OH! Mcreerian fans I just heard You Make That Look Good on the radio, I was shopping for my niece for Christmas and they had the radio on in the store; needless to say I was thrilled. Love to hear him sing this song and it was fantastic on radio. Hope this is next single but I love all of them on his album. I want to thank all of you for such a wonderful, positive site. I wish Scotty and his family a wonderful Christmas and very blessed New Year.
Merry Christmas to all of the Scotty Fans and God Bless each one of you.

  21. These AOL sessions are very cool! Scotty may have a limited vocal range, but what he does with it is KILLER. IMO he sounds best and looks more confident when he's singing in his "comfort zone". This is when his voice grabs your attention and refuses to let it go (if it ain't broke, don't even try to fix it).
I love the little nuances to ILYTB. You can tell he's gotten comfortable singing this sing for the umpteenth time, and he sounds oh-so-good. And OMG I think I could listen to him sing CAD all day long. On those songs that require him to reach for those higher notes, I think they should adjust the key lower when he's doing live performance ((i.e. like when he NAILED the NA after starting lower).

  22. 3:16 PM you possibly could be right however I did read that someone said he had a sore throat and cold when taping these. I loved all performances, some more than others. Love it when Scotty sings that deep rich tone and it just flows so evenly. I just keep going back to the video where he auditioned for Clayton Idol and he sang The Dance that was recorded by Garth Brooks, this was absolutely amazing. As you said his voice does grab your attention and refuses to let you go. I love to here him sing all of the songs on the album but You Make That Look Good, Walking In The Country, Dirty Dishes, Back on the Ground and That Old King James are my favorite ones. I have watched him from day one on American Idol and have seen him grow leaps and bounds in his performances and I look forward to seeing him continue throughout the coming years if the Lord allows it.
